Deadpool 3 Release Date Gets Disappointing Update From Director https://comicbook.com/movies/news/deadpool-3-release-date-disappointing-update-director-shawn-levy/ Tue, 17 Oct 2023 01:29:00 +0000 Jenna Anderson 5ee12cdf-42f3-4228-9713-6257c72a07c0

The Deadpool franchise is about to turn a new corner, now that the rights to the character have officially moved from 20th Century Fox to Marvel Studios. Deadpool 3 has become a highly-anticipated part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe's forthcoming slate, and is (at the time of this writing) scheduled to be released in May of 2024. That release date has been speculated about amid the still-ongoing SAG-AFTRA actors strike, as production on Deadpool 3 has been stopped for several months now. In a recent interview with The Wrap, Deadpool 3 director Shawn Levy addressed the uncertainty around the film's release date, and confirmed that even he is unsure when the film will debut. Levy did also confirm that, for the time being, he has edited half of the movie based on footage that was already filmed.

"I wish I knew. I don't even know if we officially have [a release date]. I know we were gonna be May 3," Levy revealed. "Certainly, the actors' strike and the long pause in production have put that release date in true risk. We've shot half the movie. I've edited half the movie. We're dying to get back to work and get this movie out next year."

Will Deadpool 3 Get Delayed?

As Levy explained in an interview earlier this fall, Deadpool 3 was halfway through production prior to the strike's work stoppage. Amid the strikes, Marvel Studios also paused production or pre-production on their upcoming films Thunderbolts and Blade, as well as their upcoming Wonder Man Disney+ series.

"Well, like the rest of our industry, or at least large swaths of it, we are paused. We were halfway through filming Deadpool, co-starring Wolverine. It was a joy every day, and that chemistry is, I have to say, spoiler alert, it is as relentlessly awesome as we had all hoped it would be," Levy revealed. "But we are halfway through filming, we shut down, our crew and the rest of us are awaiting a fair and equitable deal that ends these strikes and puts our industry and certainly inclusive of our movie back at work."

Who Is in the Cast of Deadpool 3?

Deadpool 3 will star Ryan Reynolds as Wade Wilson / Deadpool, Hugh Jackman as Wolverine, Morena Baccarin as Vanessa Carlysle, Leslie Uggams as Blind Al, Karan Soni as Dopinder, Stefan Kapi?i? as Piotr Rasputin/Colossus, and Emma Corrin and Matthew Macfadyen in currently-unknown roles. Jennifer Garner will be reprising her role as Elektra.

"I think you're giving me too much credit," Reynolds explained in a previous interview with Collider. "I don't believe that I'm responsible for Hugh coming back. I always wanted Hugh to come back. My first meeting with Kevin Feige when Disney bought Fox years ago, maybe three years ago, or three and a half, four years ago, I'm not sure, was about doing a movie with the two of us, a Deadpool Wolverine movie. And that was not possible at the time. And then Hugh just happened to call at that perfect moment and express that he'd be interested in coming back and doing this one more time. And the contents of that conversation, I'll let Hugh, because I know it's only inevitable that you and Hugh are going to speak at some point soon, I'm sure. I'll let Hugh answer that on his own. But he expressed interest in coming back, and then it was my job to take that to Kevin Feige one more time and sell it."

As mentioned above, Deadpool 3 is currently scheduled to be released exclusively in theaters on May 3, 2024.

Lara Parker, Dark Shadows and The Incredible Hulk Star, Dies at 84 https://comicbook.com/tv-shows/news/dark-shadows-star-lara-parker-dies-84-obituary/ Tue, 17 Oct 2023 00:45:00 +0000 Jenna Anderson 9befea65-a2df-4403-9600-7d2aa36609e5

Lara Parker, an actress known for her scene-stealing performance as Angelique Bouchard Collins on Dark Shadows, has passed away at the age of 84. The news of Parker's passing was publicly announced by producer Jim Pierson of Dan Curtis Productions, on behalf of Parker's family. Parker passed away in her sleep following a battle with cancer on Thursday, October 12, in Los Angeles, California.

"I'm heartbroken, as all of us are who knew and loved her," Kathryn Leigh Scott, who co-starred on Dark Shadows with Parker, said in a statement. "She graced our lives with her beauty, talent and friendship, and we are all richer for having had her in our lives."

Parker was born Mary Lamar Rickey on October 27, 1938 in Knoxville, Tennessee. She received her Bachelor Arts from Rhodes College and Masters of Arts in speech and drama from the University of Iowa. After deciding to move to New York to become an actress, she was cast on Dark Shadows in a matter of days. She made her onscreen debut in the early days of the soap opera's run in 1967, portraying Angelique, the witch who cursed vampire Barnabas Collins (Jonathan Frid). Parker would be a part of Dark Shadows across its run, portraying different alternate versions of Angelique up until the show's cancellation in 1971. She also reprised her role in two of the franchise's feature films -- House of Dark Shadows and Night of Dark Shadows.

"Looking back historically, Angelique was one of the earliest strong women characters portrayed on television," Parker told Den of Geek in a 2016 interview. "She was really the first "Bitch Witch" that became so popular later. But at the time I wasn't aware of being any kind of social figure. I just felt that I had a good part and I was happy to have a job and go to work and be an actress. It's a gift. But I certainly didn't see myself in the larger sense of being any kind of a social influence. I think it's rare to pick up on that in the moment. I think only looking back I see that I was actually fortunate to be, in a small sense, one of the movers and shakers in the women's movement."

In addition to Dark Shadows, Parker made appearances on television shows like Kung Fu, The F.B.I., One Life to Live, The Six Million Dollar Man, and Owen Marshall, Counselor at Law. Around the same time, Parker made appearances in films like Brian De Palma's Hi, Mom!, as well as John G. Avildsen's Oscar-winning film Save the Tiger. She also made appearances in a Broadway production of Woman is My Idea, and Off-Broadway productions of Lulu and A Gun Play.

In the late 1970s and early 1980s, Parker's work included Kolchak: The Night Stalker, Washington: Behind Closed Doors. She also portrayed Laura Banner, the deceased wife of Dr. David Banner (Bill Bixby), in the 1977 pilot of The Incredible Hulk. Parker continued acting into the 1990s, appearing in Manimal, Highway to Heaven, Capitol, and Jessica Novak.

Following her retirement from acting, Parker pivoted to being a high school English teacher. She also wrote four novels set in the Dark Shadows universe -- 1998's Angelique's Descent, 2006's Dark Shadows: The Salem Branch, 2013's Dark Shadows: Wolf Moon Rising, and 2016's Heiress of Collinwood. She also made a cameo appearance in Tim Burton's 2012 Dark Shadows reboot, and went on to reunite with some of her original co-stars in two Doctor Mabuse movies. She will posthumously appear in The Great Nick D, which was shot earlier this year.

Our thoughts are with Parker's family, friends, and fans at this time.

Daredevil Season 1 Showrunner Throws Shade at Marvel Studios' Reboot https://comicbook.com/tv-shows/news/daredevil-showrunner-steven-deknight-throws-shade-marvel-studios-reboot/ Mon, 16 Oct 2023 23:24:00 +0000 Adam Barnhardt 7a7f5340-c528-4d0b-bd14-515d5a9892bf

Steven DeKnight has been increasingly candid about his relationship with Marvel now that he no longer writes Daredevil. Monday afternoon, the writer took to X--the social platform formerly known as Twitter--to throw some shade at Marvel Studios' lack of traditional television staff. Responding to fans, DeKnight revealed excitement now that Marvel Studios has revealed it plans to alter its television output to mirror that of more classical TV.

"I am not happy the show is scrapped and have consistently stated the opposite," DeKnight said on the microblogging service. "However I AM delighted that they finally realized you need an actual showrunner who's a writer to make a series work."

Why is Marvel Studios changing its television structure?

Previously, the Kevin Feige-led outfit only had "head writers" compared to showrunners. While showrunners traditionally serve as the singular boss on a given series, Marvel Studios' lead writer simply led the writer's room and left much of the executive producing duties to Marvel Studios and its creative parliament. Now, the studio says it now plans to introduce showrunners into the mix.

Earlier this month, Marvel's head of streaming Brad Winderbaum said, "It's a term we've not only grown comfortable with but also learned to embrace... We need executives that are dedicated to this medium, that are going to focus on streaming, focus on television, because they are two different forms."

"We're trying to marry the Marvel culture with the traditional television culture," Winderbaum added elsewhere in the piece. "It comes down to, 'How can we tell stories in television that honor what's so great about the source material?'"

Loki Director Reveals How Season 2 Achieved the Look of Different Time Periods https://comicbook.com/tv-shows/news/loki-director-reveals-season-2-aesthetic-cinematography-time-periods/ Mon, 16 Oct 2023 22:55:00 +0000 Jenna Anderson a4a87b4f-539e-4510-9438-d5e28d7fca6e

We're two episodes into Loki's sophomore season, and it is already bringing a distinct flair to the tapestry of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The season's second episode definitely delivered on that front, with long sequences set in the 1970s -- where Hunter X-5 / Brad Wolfe (Rafael Casal) is starring in a Zaniac! movie -- and 1980s -- where Sylvie (Sophia di Martino) has started a new life as a McDonald's employee. One thing that caught fans' attention was the visual approach to those sequences, and according to Loki director Dan Deleeuw, it was brought to life in a unique way. While speaking to ComicBook.com, Deleeuw spoke about the thought process behind these sequences, as well as the film grain that added a distinct sheen to the '70s and '80s sequences.

"Across the entire episode, we put film grain on it," Deleeuw explained. "So, that gave it -- not a patina per se, but when you went back in different time periods, it helps seat that and it made it more believable. I think the palette was incredibly important with McDonald's, because you started getting into the more vibrant eighties colors, in contrast to the more muted colors in the seventies. And then it was just having fun and designing the seventies, finding a reason that the punks and the mods would be together, finding just the right year, the mods, kind of coming back a little bit with the jam and then Quadrophenia coming out a couple years later. So you're thinking about all that stuff. It's the fun part of the puzzle, putting that together."

Why Is McDonalds in Loki Season 2?

In a recent interview with Fast Company, Loki producer Kevin Wright spoke about the decision to set part of Season 2 at the 1980s McDonalds, and about the feeling of nostalgia he hopes it inspires.

"This character had been on a decades-long, maybe centuries-long revenge mission, and the classic trope of those stories is that it's all-consuming and she's not thinking about what comes next. Now she has this moment of opportunity, where is she going to go?" Wright explained. "When we stayed in the view of character, this woman who went on the run as a child, had been running through time, a fugitive of time, living in apocalypses, never being able to relax or slow down, the novelty of walking into a 1980s McDonald's looked appealing. You play a Little League game and go to McDonald's. You go to a kid's birthday party at McDonald's. Someone like Sylvie would never have experienced that, and would be really taken by that."

"I was worried that McDonald's would think we wanted to do something ironic or make fun of them," Wright continued. "But we were selling an earnest story, a love letter to nostalgia through a character's eyes who will see all of the novelty and joy of it."

How Doctor Strange Impacted Loki Series Revealed https://comicbook.com/tv-shows/news/doctor-strange-impacted-loki-season-2-revealed/ Mon, 16 Oct 2023 22:07:00 +0000 Adam Barnhardt 6ab7c541-bb17-4155-b181-7981d7dce4eb

The Marvel Cinematic Universe is the largest franchise Hollywood has ever seen, with an extensive web of tales and characters that frequently crossover between films and television shows. To keep things uniform, Marvel Studios often borrows visual effects work from one project to the next, making sure to keep VFX styles in line. Though Doctor Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch) and Loki (Tom Hiddleston) have only appeared together once (in Taika Waititi's Thor: Ragnarok), the former's film franchise has influenced the series starring the Asgardian god of mischief.

According to Loki Season Two director Dan DeLeeuw, his team on Loki made sure to alter the visual effects used by the Time Variance Authority as a way to compare the cinematic world's magic and science.

"I think a lot of the shows, and of course over my experience with it, you always try to figure out where the source of the technology or the science or the magic comes from," DeLeeuw tells ComicBook.com "It's like going back to Captain America: The Winter Soldier, where we had Tony's tech and graphics and then we designed SHIELD's graphics and SHIELD's Graphics weren't as sophisticated as Tony's. He could do holograms. All SHIELD's graphics were on glass. That was the best they could do."

He adds, "We always think about that, so I think the science of the TVA is different from what the magic Doctor Strange is using. You're trying to give them story. It's an effect, but it's story and what's the story behind the magic or the tech and making people wonder about that."

Avengers: Infinity War Finally Reveals Why Hulk Was in Trailers https://comicbook.com/marvel/news/avengers-infinity-war-hulk-trailer-scenes-explained/ Mon, 16 Oct 2023 20:30:00 +0000 Brandon Davis 5cbac24a-ef92-4f8c-b6cc-ab2f4abbad39

Avengers: Infinity War trailers included a moment which has left Marvel fans and detectives online baffled to this day. There is footage of the Hulk running through the trees of Wakanda, charging into battle with several Avengers by his side. After the first sequence of the Avengers: Infinity War, the Hulk did not come back into the movie. In fact, the Hulk was sidelined until he was revealed to have merged with Bruce Banner to become Smart Hulk in Avengers: Endgame during scenes set five years after the events of Infinity War. Now, second unit director and VFX supervisor Dan Deleeuw has revealed why footage with the Hulk in Wakanda existed.

"It's something that, there's stuff that misleads, which I generally haven't been a part of per se, but that one was a giant spoiler, right?" Deleeuw told ComicBook.com in an exclusive interview available on Phase Zero. "Because we didn't want to give away Smart Hulk at that point. And, so I think you've probably seen it where there's the scene that we didn't put in where Hulk and Banner are arguing with each other inside the Hulkbuster and then what was originally going to happen is that Hulk was going to come out, and we didn't realize it was Smart Hulk yet, and it was an idea that I think Jeff Ford had on Ultron. There was another scene that it didn't make it in, but the idea was that he thought Tony went to go confront Ultron, and really he had stuck Banner in the Iron Man armor and then Banner Hulks out and started wailing on Ultron. It was such an amazing idea. It's like, 'Oh, we got to put this in.'" They did not, however, end up including such a sequence in Avengers: Age of Ultron.

As it turns out, a sequence where Hulk pops out of an Iron Man suit to beat up Ultron almost made its way into Avengers: Infinity War. By the looks of the footage which exists, it seems there may be a version of the film out there where he does. "We used the same idea at the end of Infinity War, but again, it didn't, both times it didn't help the story," Deleeuw admitted. "So, both times it came out and it was like, 'Oh!' It's like, it's such a great gag, but we really didn't have a chance to get it in. So it was kind of, that shot was caught in the confluence between trying to get this really fun idea and also not having Nat, Natasha have to go up the Hulk who just magically turned into Smart Hulk, and then meanwhile, Thanos is wiping everybody out. So it's all story."

Hulk being removed from Wakanda is one of many changes made in efforts to improve land on the perfect stories and moments for the two most recent Avengers movies. Deleeuw made his directorial debut with the second episode of Loki's second season this week. Previously, he worked on the aforementioned Avengers titles as well as Iron Man 3, Captan America: The Winter Soldier, Captain America: Civil War, Eternals, Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania, and more.

"It was something that I always wanted to do and it was something that was very fortunate to work with the Russos," Deleeuw said of his first time directing. "They were always really open to ideas and collaboration just by the very nature of those films being so big. And so it was something that they gave me the ability to, we once say, 'Hey, go shoot that. Go shoot that. 'And then it's like Endgame. It's like, Joe's like, 'Well, do the additional photography.' I'm like, 'Okay, that's great.' So it's like you got the experience with that and then branch in the second unit directing and you get experience with that. But it was something that I always kind of approach visual effects from a story point of view. If there wasn't telling a story or if it wasn't servicing the story, then it didn't really, whatever we were designing and a fight sequence or a battle just didn't necessarily be there unless it was too cool not to put in."

Deleeuw's episode of Loki is available now on Disney+. The full interview is available on the Phase Zero channel.

X-Men Will Rise From the Grave in Dead X-Men Series https://comicbook.com/comics/news/dead-x-men-marvel-comics-announcement/ Mon, 16 Oct 2023 20:22:00 +0000 Timothy Adams 8fbb54c5-2b8b-4571-b99a-7fd9f0c6dd5a

Deceased X-Men will rise from the dead to bring the Krakoa era to an end in Dead X-Men. One of the many announcements to come out of Marvel's Next Big Thing panel at New York Comic Con this weekend was the reveal of Fall of the House of X and Rise of the Powers of X. The two interconnected series will span across space and time, stretching into all-new limited series. One of those books is Dead X-Men by writer Steve Foxe, and artists Vincenzo Carrat?. Bernard Chang, and Jonas Scharf.

Foxe is the current writer of Dark X-Men, which explores the twisted nature of mutantkind. Foxe teams up with this all-star lineup of artists to revisit the key moments in realities' past that paved the way to Krakoa as a team of fallen mutants are sent through history by Professor X on a desperate mission to reverse Krakoa's fate. Marvel is keeping the identity of Dead X-Men's cast a secret for now, but a cover of the first issue by Pere P?rez offers some clues.

What is Marvel's Dead X-Men series about?

The description of Dead X-Men #1 reads, "DEATH WAS ONLY THE BEGINNING! When the world turned against Krakoa, these five mutants lost their lives...but their mission as X-Men is just getting started. To preserve Xavier's dream, they must accomplish the impossible - or die again trying!"

Explaining the new series, Foxe said: "DEAD X-MEN is one of the most complex stories I've worked on at Marvel, but also one of purest: a small group of mutants who have to accomplish the impossible, which is the premise that made me fall in love with the X-Men in the first place. I've been working closely with Kieron [GIlen] and Jordan [White] to make sure that the mission these unexpected X-Men undertake has real repercussions for the line--and the very existence of Krakoa as we know it. I'm also stoked Marvel was up for the challenge of assembling such a big art team. There's a reason you'll see so many talented creators credited on the book, and I can't wait for readers to discover the secret behind DEAD X-MEN."

Loki Director Reveals How Fan-Favorite Scene Was Partially Improvised https://comicbook.com/tv-shows/news/loki-director-fan-favorite-scene-improvised-brad-wolfe-season-2/ Mon, 16 Oct 2023 20:14:00 +0000 Jenna Anderson 513c7389-1179-47dc-95ed-8dd1762ea047

Audiences have been enjoying the second season of Loki, which has debuted two episodes thus far exclusively on Disney+. The Marvel Cinematic Universe series has balanced surprising dramatic reveals with more lighthearted moments -- and it sounds like one memorable scene was not completely in the script. In the second episode of Loki's second season, Mobius (Owen Wilson) and Hunter X-5 / Brad Wolfe (Rafael Casal) bicker about several things, including Brad's work as an actor in movies like Zaniac. Brad refers to his work as "cinema" and "elevated thriller", and to some Marvel fans, it seemed as if the scene was an intentional dig at Martin Scorsese' comments about comic book movies. According to Dan Deleeuw, who directed Loki Season 2 Episode 2, that was not intentional.

"I love that it was an elevated thriller," Deleew told ComicBook.com's Phase Zero podcast in an exclusive interview. "That's what happens in all honesty, that's what happens. We had where we needed to go in the script, we had to know that Mobius figures out that why is Brad acting so jumpy? But we had Owen and Rafael there that day and were shooting that scene last, and they had the entire day to play. And so they would come out throughout the day and run the scene for me and say, 'Well, what are you thinking?' It's like, 'Oh, this is great. Just have to make sure this gets to this and gets to that.' And so we shot it and it was pretty much planned out by the time we got there, so I had first take, I'm like, 'Alright, let's do it straight. Let's do what we talked about.' Then the second take, 'Let's amp it up.' And then the third take, I was like, 'Alright, go for it.' And it was just Owen and Rafael just tag teaming off each other, and the cut that's in there now is with one little trim is the two of them just running. We cross shot it, so we just had it all together. And then you have the part where Owen smacks Rafael in the arm. It was great because Rafael didn't expect it at all, and they were just in it. And just the beauty of having two geniuses and two writers on your show."

Avengers: Endgame Portals Scene Was Originally Completely Different (Exclusive) https://comicbook.com/marvel/news/avengers-endgame-portals-deleted-scene-revealed-mcu/ Mon, 16 Oct 2023 20:08:00 +0000 Brandon Davis 5d4a6301-578c-48b8-a936-0a2163ec225c

Avengers: Endgame delivered some of the most iconic moments in cinematic history, with the culmination of the Marvel Cinematic Universe's Infinity Saga seeing nearly all of its heroes emerge in the rubble of Avengers HQ. Some were already there to fight Thanos but most of them stepped through portals opened by Doctor Strange and Wong, having been revived when the Hulk snapped his fingers to undo the actions of Thanos from Avengers: Infinity War. As it turns out, the famous, "On your left," and moments which followed played out quite differently in the first attempt at creating the unforgettable moment.

Dan Deleeuw, a Marvel VFX supervisor on several projects and now director with Loki's second episode of Season 2, talked with ComicBook.com about his time working on Endgame. "It was interesting because there was a lot of different ideas," Deleeuw revealed. "There was a version of the cut, the day that we had all the actors together, and it was like this long panning shot across all the actors." As it turns out, the portals moments originally were not laid out in a way which gave each character their big return moments.

"It was the day that everyone was there and it was like this giant, expensive in essentiality you had all the actors there, but it just didn't play as well as we wanted," Deleeuw recalled. "And so it was something that I got with pre-viz and Jeff Ford, our editor, and we just said, 'We have to go with the portals and just you picking who comes out when.' It was just something that for I think originally it was like we knew who survived and when they were coming back, but we needed to slow it down and give the audience a chance to welcome their heroes back. And so it was so interesting in terms of like, 'Okay, who comes from Titan first? Okay, you get the Guardians and then Star-Lord's going to show up.' And then just being in the theater that day, it's like starting, okay, we got to do Spider-Man last because Spider-Man!. So it was very much crafted to be emotional, and I think it was amazing for all of us that opening weekend, how well the fans responded to it."

Avengers: Endgame has released several scenes which did not make the cut of its theatrical release which was ultimately a couple minutes longer than three hours. While a sequence with most of the actors together did make the cut of the film, leading to Captain America calling upon the Avengers to assemble, it seems there was a dramatically different version of this sequence. Much like the "I am Iron Man," moment which followed, the crew found what worked best after several tries.

Deleeuw served as second unit director on Avengers: Endgame before going on to make his directorial debut on Loki Season 2. ComicBook.com's full interview with Deleeuw can be found on the Phase Zero channel on YouTube. Loki releases new episodes of Season 2 every Thursday on Disney+.

Marvel's Spider-Man 2 Defeats Starfield on Metacritic in Big Fall Showdown https://comicbook.com/gaming/news/starfield-marvels-spider-man-2-metacritic/ Mon, 16 Oct 2023 19:46:00 +0000 Tyler Fischer 8741be81-df5a-4927-a6f6-bd087f5ac60a

Our Marvel's Spider-Man review went live today alongside dozens and dozens of other reviews for the new PS5 game. And all of these reviews have contributed to a Metacritic score for the PS5 exclusive. More specifically, 120 different reviews have gone live for the new Spidey game, or at least that's how many have been posted to Metacritic. And so far all of these reviews have distilled down to a score of 91. If this score holds, Marvel's Spider-Man 2 will boast a "Metacritic Must Play" badge and will be one of the highest-rated games of 2023.

This fall, each platform holder has one huge release. PlayStation has Marvel's Spider-Man 2, Xbox has Starfield, and Nintendo has Super Mario Bros. Wonder. Reviews for latter of these three releases haven't come out yet, but we can now compare Marvel's Spider-Man 2 and Starfield, and when it comes to critical reception, the former has come out on top. While Marvel's Spider-Man 2 is sitting at a 91 on Metacritic, Starfield is sitting at an 86 and 83, with the scores varying depending on the platform. These are respectable scores for the Bethesda RPG but they are beneath the highs Bethesda Game Studios has achieved in the past. And now they are lower than the competition's big fall release.

Of course, Marvel's Spider-Man 2 may not retain this score over time, but it seems like most outlets received a code early, which in turn suggests the score won't change much. And for what it's worth it's 120 reviews is more reviews than Starfield has on Metacritic.

At the end of the day, these two games attempt to do two very different things. They aren't even in the same genre. So comparing them as just games is borderline pointless, however, because both are so important for their respective brands, there is a comparison to make. And in this comparison, Marvel's Spider-Man 2 has seemingly won. That said, something tells me Super Mario Bros. Wonder could end up being the highest-rated of all three.

Marvel's Spider-Man 2 Metacritic Score Revealed, And PlayStation Has Another Huge Hit https://comicbook.com/gaming/news/marvels-spider-man-2-metacritic-score-reviews/ Mon, 16 Oct 2023 14:14:00 +0000 Tyler Fischer df51abd1-a5de-44b6-8128-b9f3ace985cb

Marvel's Spider-Man 2 is set to release worldwide in a few days via the PS5 and the PS5 only. Ahead of this release date, reviews for the PlayStation game have gone live, and to the surprise of no one, Insomniac Games has another hit on its hands. Rumblings of the game internally reviewing well seem founded as the game is earning strong review scores, currently sitting at a 91. The first game landed at an 88, which means the sequel looks poised to potentially perform better by a few points.

It's worth noting that it's very likely this score will change over time. In fact, it may change by the next hour. This is just the initial score. Typically, over time, Metacritic scores dip. How much is usually dependent on how many reviews go live at embargo. The more reviews that go live at embargo, the smaller this dip tends to be. Whatever the case, except this score to vary within one to two points, possibly more.

Our Review

Of course, everyone's milage with Marvel's Spider-Man 2 will vary. That said, for more insight into whether or not it will be for you, be sure to check out our official review for the game that just went live moments ago.

"Ultimately, Marvel's Spider-Man 2 captures the essence of the character on a micro and macro level," reads a snippet from our review of the game. "We get big, epic set pieces infused with personal stakes, spectacular combat, the amazing web-swinging that every kid dreams of, and a story that tests Miles Morales and Peter Parker on both physical and mental levels. While it isn't without its flaws, Spider-Man 2 is a sensational follow-up to the previous games and yet another winner for PlayStation players."

Release Date and Game Information

Marvel's Spider-Man 2 is set to release worldwide on October 20 via PS5. Right now, there's no word of a PC version, but there is word of a price point. Like other Sony AAA games, it will cost $70 at launch, and this will be the only way to play the game. It will not be available via PS Plus.

"Spider-Men, Peter Parker and Miles Morales, return for an exciting new adventure in the critically acclaimed Marvel's Spider-Man franchise for PS5," reads an official blurb about the game. "Swing, jump and utilize the new Web Wings to travel across Marvel's New York, quickly switching between Peter Parker and Miles Morales to experience different stories and epic new powers, as the iconic villain Venom threatens to destroy their lives, their city and the ones they love."

Jeff the Land Shark, Alligator Loki, and more of your favorite super-powered pets will assemble for a new event series titled Infinity Paws. If you couldn't tell, the name is a callback to the iconic Infinity Gauntlet by Jim Starlin, George Perez, and Ron Lim. Fans of the Marvel Cinematic Universe got to see a version of this play out on the big screen in Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame. Now it's time for a similar event to play out with fan-favorite animals like Jeff the Land Shark, Carol Danvers' feline companion Chewie, Alligator Loki, and Lucky the Pizza Dog.

Marvel announced Infinity Paws at its Next Big Thing panel at New York Comic Con over the weekend. Infinity Paws is a new Infinity Comic launching in spring 2024 on Marvel Unlimited, the publisher's digital subscription service. The upcoming event series is written by seasoned Infinity Comic creator Jason Loo (Lucky the Pizza Dog, X-Men Unlimited) and superstar artist and colorist Nao Fuji (Marvel Meow).

"Marvel Meow fans will be in for a treat! Or TREATS!" said Jason Loo. "Because we got almost all your favorite Marvel pets in this giant crossover, from the furry ones to the scaly ones. And I couldn't be more pleased to be joined by the delightfully talented Nao Fuji illustrating this series."

Marvel teases next crossover event Blood Hunt

Infinity Paws wasn't the only announcement to come out of New York Comic Con. Along with announcements for the Ultimate Universe and the end of the X-Men's Krakoa era was the reveal of Blood Hunt. It appears to be a vampire-themed event with the main series written by Moon Knight, Avengers, and Doctor Strange writer Jed MacKay with art by Pepe Larraz and Marte Gracia.

"We have vampires in our books all the time, there's some bad blood there," MacKay said at New York Comic Con. "What happens if the shoe was on the other foot? We've got the Avengers, Moon Knight's Midnight Mission, Doctor Strange, Miles Morales, and of course, Blade, and there's going to be more vampires you can shake a stick at."

The description of Blood Hunt reads, "Vampires have always walked amongst the shadows of the Marvel Universe, but in Spring 2024, the long night arrives and these bloodsucking terrors will endure the spotlight like never before," the publisher said of the title. "The main event series will be brought to life by an A-team of Marvel talent: current Avengers scribe Jed MacKay and acclaimed X-Men artists Pepe Larraz and Marte Gracia. In classic Marvel fashion, BLOOD HUNT will also spill out into a host of tie-in issues in Marvel's hottest current series and see the launch of all-new limited series, one-shots, and redefining status quos."

Marvel Studios has one more film dropping in 2023, and it's right around the corner. The Marvels, which is being helmed by Candyman director Nia DaCosta, is heading to theaters next month and it will see Brie Larson's Captain Marvel/Carol Danvers teaming up with Iman Vellani's Ms. Marvel/Kamala Khan from Ms. Marvel as well as Teyonah Parris' Monica Rambeau from WandaVision. Today, all three heroes got new character posters in addition to Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson), Prince Yan (Park Seo-Joon), and Goose.

"A new team assembles in these brand-new character posters for #The Marvels, only in theaters November 10," Marvel Studios wrote on Instagram. You can check out the posters below:

"It's amazing. I'm so excited that it's announced and I can talk about," Larson previously said of The Marvels. "Nia's amazing and she got the job because she was the best person for the job. That's one of my favorite parts about this. She just gave an incredible presentation and I'm inspired by her! She has confidence, it's a big deal to step into this thing we know as the Marvel Universe. It's this huge thing and to have a leader who's just like, 'Yeah, I'm meant to be here.'"

What Is The Marvels About?

In The Marvels, which arrives in theaters on November 10th, Carol Danvers aka Captain Marvel (Brie Larson) has reclaimed her identity from the tyrannical Kree and taken revenge on the Supreme Intelligence. But unintended consequences see Carol shouldering the burden of a destabilized universe. When her duties send her to an anomalous wormhole linked to a Kree revolutionary, her powers become entangled with that of Jersey City super-fan, Kamala Khan (Iman Vellani) aka Ms. Marvel, and Carol's estranged niece, now S.A.B.E.R. astronaut Captain Monica Rambeau (Teyonah Parris). Together, this unlikely trio must team-up and learn to work in concert to save the universe as "The Marvels." The Marvels will also see the franchise returns of Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury, Saagar Shaikh as Aamir Khan, Zenobia Shroff as Muneeba Khan, and Mohan Kapur as Yusuf Khan. New cast members include Zawe Ashton, Park Seo-joon, and Shamier Anderson. Produced by Marvel Studios, The Marvels is directed by Nia DaCosta with a script from DaCosta, Megan McDonnell, and Elissa Karasik.

Loki Costume Designer Reveals Which Character's Costume Was The Most Challenging https://comicbook.com/marvel/news/loki-costume-designer-reveals-which-characters-costume-was-the-most-challenging/ Sun, 15 Oct 2023 14:59:00 +0000 Jamie Jirak eb78e5c8-2f82-4c62-be3c-3fb8209216f6

The second season of Loki is currently two episodes deep on Disney+, and it's already taken Loki (Tom Hiddleston) to many places across time. In addition to being in the TVA, Loki and Mobius (Owen Wilson) have visited places in the 1970s and 1980s, and the show's trailer teases there will be more time periods to tackle along the way. ComicBook.com recently spoke to Loki costume designer Christine Wada, who talked about creating looks for the 1970s in addition to the research involved in recreating old McDonald's uniforms. While taking us on a tour of the various Loki costumes, Wada also revealed why Sylvie's (Sophia Di Martino) was the most challenging.

"I will say Sylvie's costume was the most difficult and it really comes from a very technical place of just multiples because the acid wash jeans are something that you can't just, for multiple reasons, you can't just go buy them or make them because the acid wash is different in every era. So we had to actually print it," Wada explained.

She continued, "And same with her jacket, getting it tonally right. Took forever to get, because even though I loved the herringbone [pattern] of the eighties, I really felt like that, just the eighties, it just spoke to herringbone, spoke to the eighties. If it was too contrasty, I just thought it might really bump in other eras, like in the 1890s or something. I just felt like she's a little more stealth. Her character's a little too stealth for that."

Christine Wada Explains How She Made Loki Costumes More Comfortable:

During Loki's first season, Wada made headlines for designing Slyvie's costume to have easy access for breastfeeding. We asked Wada if she made any special modifications this time around, and she revealed she made detachable sleeves so the actors could be more comfortable between takes.

"Yeah, I think the Temporal Core suit, I definitely feel pretty proud of that engineering feat," Wada shared. "It was like building a spaceship," she added with a laugh. "I think it had similar specifications in terms of actors' needs. I really wanted to make sure they weren't going to get too hot in it. So I designed the sleeves to come off. So between takes, it wasn't having to get them out of the entire suit, which would take a lot of time. So I made it so we could just take off the sleeves. I've made it modular for actor comfortability."

"Those suits get really hot and they're cumbersome, but then to take it all the way off and put it all the way back on is a lot of time for camera to be waiting," Wada added. "So I was trying to figure out the Tetris of that, but also it helped to give the suit volume."

What Is Loki Season 2 About?

Marvel Studios fan-favorite Tom Hiddleston stars in Loki Season 2, returning as the titular God of Mischief for another round of time-traveling hijinx on Disney+ on October 6th. Loki is once again joined by Mobius (Owen Wilson) as the two attempt to keep the timelines intact. After the events of Season 1 saw his variant Sylvie (Sophia Di Martino) kill He Who Remains and unleash the wrath of Kang the Conqueror upon the Multiverse, Loki must once again embark on an adventure to keep reality from collapsing. Loki was last seen in the post-credits scene of Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, where he and Mobius were keeping tabs on one of Kang's mysterious variants. Loki Season 2 will continue the story of the Multiverse Saga in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

ComicBook.com's podcast Phase Zero will be recording live episodes every week following Loki season 2's new episodes on Disney+. Each week we will review, break down, and discuss the latest installment of the new Marvel series immediately after the episode's conclusion! The new episodes will be broadcast live on the Phase Zero channel on YouTube before being made available on all major podcast platforms. Matthew Vaughn Was Told "You'll Never Work in This Town Again" After Ditching X-Men 3 https://comicbook.com/marvel/news/matthew-vaughn-was-told-youll-never-work-in-this-town-again-after-ditching-x-men-3-nycc/ Sun, 15 Oct 2023 00:27:00 +0000 Jamie Jirak ab5e4e79-8d78-4e04-864e-2cc4538645f5

New York Comic Con is currently in full swing, and while actors in attendance are unable to discuss their projects due to the SAG strike, some directors are there are sharing insights into their past and future films. During a panel, Matthew Vaughn confirmed he's working on a Kick-Ass reboot as well as Kingsman 3, and also discussed his time working in the X-Men franchise. Vaughn is known for helming X-Men: First Class, but he almost directed X-Men: The Last Stand. He revealed during the panel that he left the project after a fake script was written to trick Halle Berry (Storm). He also recalled being told he'd never work in Hollywood again after leaving the project.

"Yeah, that was bizarre because I went from Layer Cake, a tiny 3 million pound movie, and suddenly I got Hollywood calling up saying, 'Would you like to make an X-Men movie?' And I was like, 'Yes.' And I thought X-2 is a masterpiece. So I was worried about trying to step into Bryan Singer's shoes, and it was a dream come true. I storyboarded the movie. The end of the movie was not the movie I was gonna make. The Golden Gate sequence was the beginning of Act Two and we had this crazy action sequence for Washington ... but I was naive," Vaughn explained.

"The way I produce films was, 'Here's a budget and a schedule, stick to it.' And Hollywood doesn't work that way. They go, 'Here's the budget. Here's a schedule. We're going to pretend we're going to do it for that and then we'll make it all up,' and I didn't know that. I didn't know that back then. so I was naive to walk out. I was given the speech, 'You'll never work in this town again,' and I sort of believed in that," he continued.

"The man who said you'll never work in this town again, watched Kick-Ass. And to his credit, he rang me up and said, 'You know what, I didn't mean it when I said that,'" Vaughn added.

While Vaughn has no plans to return to the world of X-Men, he did tease his Kick-Ass reboot at NYCC.

"We will be doing a reboot of Kick-Ass next year, but it's a total... it's like... it's as brave as the first one but totally different and more reflective of the times we're in," Vaughn told ComicBook.com.

Stay tuned for more updates from NYCC.

Matthew Vaughn Quit X-Men 3 After Fake Script Was Written to Trick Halle Berry https://comicbook.com/movies/news/x-men-3-matthew-vaughn-quit-fake-halle-berry-script/ Sat, 14 Oct 2023 23:55:00 +0000 Adam Barnhardt 38df29a3-e0d8-4646-aabc-9d8d1e7569bc

At one point, Matthew Vaughn was set to direct X-Men: The Last Stand, the end cap to 20th Century's first live-action series based on the classic Marvel property. As the director has now revealed, he decided to leave the project because of how the studio wanted to treat one of the film's leads. During a spotlight panel at New York Comic Con, Vaugn revealed one studio executive had sent Halle Berry a fake script with sensitive matter included as a way to coax the star into agreeing to appear.

"One of the main reasons I actually quit X3 and it was a true story, and I don't care if I'm not meant to say it, but Hollywood is really political in an odd way. I went into one of the executives office and I saw an X3 script and I immediately knew that it was a lot fatter. I was like, 'What the hell's this? This draft?' Oh, don't worry about it. Like no, no, I'm the director," Vaughn said during the panel. "I'm worrying about this draft. Tell me what it is. Wouldn't tell me, so I grabbed it from him. It was like a crazy moment, but I grabbed it. Open the first page and it said Africa, Storm. kids dying have no water, she creates a thunderstorm and saves all these children. Okay, it's pretty cool idea."

That's when Vaughn said the executive pointed out the scene was only included to get Berry to agree to appear in the flick, and the studio wanted to axe the moment after Berry signed her contract.

"They said it was the 'The Halle Berry script,' because she hasn't signed up yet. But once she gets what she wants it to be and she signs up, we'll throw it in the bin," the filmmaker added. "And I was like, 'Wow, you're going to do that to an Oscar winning actress who plays Storm? I'm out of here. So I quit."

Even though he ended up not directing X-Men: The Last Stand, Vaughn would go on to work for 20th Century Fox on X-Men: First Class, the first film in the studio's second trilogy.

Marvel's X-Men reboot has yet to set a release date. Most of Fox's X-Men movies can now be seen streaming on Disney+.

Marvel's Avengers: Twilight Trailer Released https://comicbook.com/marvel/news/marvels-avengers-twilight-trailer-released/ Sat, 14 Oct 2023 22:15:00 +0000 Spencer Perry b91fa073-939b-4428-bfe4-b2610301312c

Straight from New York Comic Con, Marvel Comics has revealed new details on the upcoming Avengers: Twilight, a new mini-series from writer Chip Zdarsky and artist Daniel Acu?a, including a trailer for the upcoming event comic. It was previously confirmed that the new series will show off a new version of the future of the Marvel universe, and the Avengers: Twilight trailer gives us a look at what we can expect. Avengers: Twilight mostly seems to be focusing on Captain America, now an old man living in a world without an Avengers team. The first issue of Avenges: Twilight will be published on January 16th, with five more issues to follow afterward.

Avengers: Twilight is described as follows: "In a gleaming new world of prosperity, Captain America is no more. But Steve Rogers still exists, floating through an America where freedom is an illusion, where THE AVENGERS are strangers and his friends are long dead. But is the Dream? How do you assemble Avengers in a world that doesn't want them? PLUS: A behind-the-scenes look at the making of this issue!"

So what can we learn from the Avengers: Twilight trailer? One of the first big reveals is that Captain America appears to have run for the United States Senate at some point, as a "Senator Rogers" poster featuring him in costume can be seen. It's unclear if he was successful in his political endeavors, but we're going to venture a guess that no one is having a good time in Avengers: Twilight so he may not have succeeded on election day.

There's also the larger implications of the fate of The Avengers team themselves in Avengers: Twilight. Only a handful of characters are seen in the trailer, clearly in flashbacks. One sequence appears to show Tony Stark dead on the ground, or rather, the Iron Man armor on the ground and Tony Stark shrunk down to a smaller size by The Wasp hiding in some rubble. There also appears to be a descendant of Tony Stark's building a fleet of new Iron Man suits in the far future, plus appearances by what looks like Luke Cage and Kamala Khan.

Marvel Reveals How the X-Men's Krakoa Era Will End https://comicbook.com/comics/news/marvel-reveals-how-the-x-mens-krakoa-era-will-end/ Sat, 14 Oct 2023 20:02:00 +0000 Jamie Lovett dc5e8619-8143-46d5-88fa-0932a6804463

Marvel Studios has revealed new details about the coming official end of the X-Men's Krakoa era. The Krakoan Age that began with 2019's House of X and Powers of X series will conclude with three previously teased miniseries: Fall of the House of X, Rise of the Powers of X, and Resurrection of Magneto. These series will then give way to the new X-Men era launching in 2024 under the editorial guidance of veteran Marvel executive editor Tom Brevoort, with more details about that shift teased for November. Marvel revealed Mark Brooks' teaser image for Krakoa's final chapter, covers for the first issues of each of the three miniseries, and a trailer during Marvel's Next Big Thing panel at New York Comic Con.

Current X-Men writer Gerry Duggan writes and Immortal X-Men artist Lucas Werneck draws Fall of the House of X. The new synopsis reveals Cyclops on trial and facing the death penalty as mutantkind prepares to make its last stand against Orchis.

Immortal X-Men writer Kieron Gillen and Powers of X artist R.B. Silva helm Rise of the Powers of X. The series takes place in a future where Orchis is victorious, but Nimrod and Omega Sentinel have other plans for ascension beyond mutants and humans.

In Resurrection of Magneto, by X-Men Red's Al Ewing and artist Luciano Vecchio, Storm must make a choice. Does she go against Magneto's wishes to bring the master of magnetism back from death? And will he survive the shock of what has happened to mutants since his death if she does?

Marvel's Spider-Man 2: Yuri Lowenthal Teases Peter and Miles Dynamic https://comicbook.com/gaming/news/marvels-spider-man-2-yuri-lowenthal-peter-parker-miles-morales-tease/ Sat, 14 Oct 2023 17:53:00 +0000 Aaron Perine 3b18143f-dfdd-40f6-beec-ec9162ce51de

Marvel's Spider-Man 2 star Yuri Lowenthal is teasing his character's dynamic with Miles Morales in the new game. Collider sat down with the Peter Parker voice actor to discuss the highly-anticipated title. Yes, Nadji Jeter plays Miles in the PlayStation series, and their relationship has grown over the course of the first game and Miles's adventure. Now, they're both up against a massive new threat with Venom and Kraven on the loose. It's been a bit of a trial by fire for the younger Spider-Man. Miles is going to have to really step it up to help his mentor when the symbiotic gets involved. The store of Marvel's Spider-Man 2 is both heroes really coming into their own when faced with overwhelming odds. Here's what the star had to say.

"I mean, me and Nadji now have known each other since that first game. Much like Peter does in this game with Miles, I've gotten to watch Nadji grow up and come into his own and really tune into his power and who he is," Lowenthal said. "So, while that doesn't happen with every game, you don't get to enjoy that mirroring of a relationship in real life and in a game, it just so happened that it worked out that way for this."

"I love seeing that relationship play out in the game because the first game was more Pete's game, and the second game was obviously more Miles' game, and this one is very evenhanded. Both of them get powerful, powerful journeys, and you really get to see Miles come into his own and really stand in his power," the actor added. "At certain points throughout the game, the relationship tips where Miles is guiding Pete, where Pete loses his way, and Miles has to become very heavy-handed--without giving too much away--he steps beyond the mentorship and into tough love."

Will Sony's PS5 Spider-Man Enter The Spider-Verse Again?

Audiences cheered when Spider-Man PS4 showed up in Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse. ComicBook.com's Phase Zero podcast asked Yuri Lowenthal about another trip into the Spider-Society headquarters. The voice actor is absolutely down for another appearance. But, what he would really love is seeing universe 42's Miles Morales pop-up in the game somehow. A lot of players out there would love the sound of that too. As the wait for Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse continues to stretch onward.

"God, I hope so," Lowenthal told the hosts. "Again, surprises, even for me. They don't tell me all the stuff that's in the game. Mostly, just because I don't need it to do my job. So I don't know to be honest. I hope. I'm hoping just like everyone else. I was so excited that they included my Spider-Man in the movie. I think it would only be fair. So, I would hope going forward that there's more crossover."

How Long Will Lowenthal Play Spider-Man?

marvels-spider-man-2-peter.jpg
(Photo: PlayStation)

Elsewhere in the same conversation on Phase Zero, Lowenthal said that he wanted to keep playing Spider-Man for as long as he possibly could. For as long as Insomniac and PlayStation give him the thumbs-up, he'll get into the booth and deliver the voice that so many players out there have grown accustomed to. Lowenthal shared that he still occasionally gets surprised that people want him to be Spider-Man. If they were to stop him today, he would feel great about all that he's accomplished as Peter Parker and be grateful for the entire experience.

"I'll be honest, I'm just excited that at my age they still let me play Spider-Man, or that they ever let me play Spider-Man in the first place," Lowenthal added. "I'll do it to my dying breath if they'll let me because I love it so much. I love working with [Insomniac] so much and I love what they do. And I just got to say, I love playing Spider-Man. It is the best. I'll do it forever if they ask me to but I also understand if at some point they're like, 'You know what, we're going to have to switch gears.' And I'd be like, 'You know what? I had a good run.' Not everyone can say that they do what I get to do. Even if it ended today I'd be like, 'I did that.' But I also hope it goes on forever."

Kevin Feige Reveals Opening-Night Tradition Marvel Studios Still Does https://comicbook.com/movies/news/marvel-studios-kevin-feige-opening-night-tradition-theaters/ Sat, 14 Oct 2023 14:24:00 +0000 Aaron Perine 8d50c170-7d5c-4068-8dc3-e05b5849068b

Kevin Feige revealed one big tradition that he does every time a new Marvel movie comes out. The President of Marvel Studios talked to Variety about how he sneaks into the back of new releases whenever one hits theaters. Feige explained that he will get into one of the showings on opening night just to gauge audience reactions. Moments like Avengers: Endgame's big reveals and Black Panther were eye-opening moments for him. You could clearly see the impact this all had on fans. While Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania might not have inspired the same fervor, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 really delivered, hopefully The Marvels can balance things out.

"We've had a tradition at Marvel Studios that started with the very first 'Iron Man.' For every new release, the cast, producers, director, and I will drop in on an opening night showing and watch the movie with the fans," Feige said. "Feeling the excitement in the theater, hearing cheers or gasps from the audience, is always a reminder of what these movies and characters mean to fans."

The executive's added, "Being there on opening night of 'Avengers: Endgame,' hearing the crowds, is something I'll never forget. Also, the feedback we received after 'Black Panther' came out. Never in my wildest dreams did I think it would have the kind of impact it did."

Kevin Feige Muses on The MCU's Future

(Photo: Marvel Studios)

With Loki Season 2 already rolling and The Marvels fast-approaching, it's a busy Fall for Marvel Studios. Variety also asked Kevin Feige about the future of the MCU. In his answer, he pointed towards the long history of the comics division. While the MCU is already heading towards Secret Wars, there is still so much comics history that they haven't even gotten to on the big screen yet. It feels like as long as the crowds keep showing up for each project, there will be more stories.

Feige told the outlet, "The great thing about Marvel truly is how many wonderful, interesting characters we have in the comics -- they've been at it for 85 years. Even after 32 movies, it feels like we've barely scratched the surface."

Marvel TV Gets A Revamp

(Photo: Marvel Studios)

Marvel Studios is currently reformatting their TV division after some problems with Daredevil: Born Again. A Hollywood Reporter piece outlined this new strategy. (That some observers on the Internet have said has more to do with the writers strike than just Daredevil...) Basically, each show will have a showrunner like in traditional TV. This change makes a lot of sense and fans were generally receptive to the news online. However, the wait for Daredevil continues to stretch on.

Marvel's head of streaming Brad Winderbaum was asked about showrunners. He said, "It's a term we've not only grown comfortable with but also learned to embrace... We need executives that are dedicated to this medium, that are going to focus on streaming, focus on television, because they are two different forms."

"We're trying to marry the Marvel culture with the traditional television culture," Winderbaum continued in the report. "It comes down to, 'How can we tell stories in television that honor what's so great about the source material?'"

Would you love to have a celebrity surprise you at one of these screenings? Let us know down in the comments!

New The Marvels Teaser May Spoil a Major MCU Cameo https://comicbook.com/movies/news/new-the-marvels-teaser-spoil-major-mcu-cameo-valkyrie/ Sat, 14 Oct 2023 03:49:00 +0000 Jenna Anderson 9874ab2f-5a82-4300-a609-3cb07fa75734

We're officially less than a month out from The Marvels, the long-awaited sequel to Captain Marvel. The film is poised to bring a lot to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, including a team-up between Carol Danvers / Captain Marvel (Brie Larson), Kamala Khan / Ms. Marvel (Iman Vellani), and Monica Rambeau (Teyonah Parris). As a new teaser for The Marvels reveals, those might not be the only heroines who make an appearance in the film.

The promo, which was quietly released as an X advertisement through Marvel Studios' official account, ends with Carol remarking that she "called a friend." This is then followed by a glimpse of the Bifrost, seemingly suggesting that an Asgardian -- either Thor (Chris Hemsworth) or Valkyrie (Tessa Thompson) is making an appearance.

Will Valkyrie Appear in The Marvels?

The idea of a potential Valkyrie cameo in The Marvels wouldn't seem too unconventional -- especially as Thompson worked on Little Woods, the feature film debut of The Marvels director Nia DaCosta. And even before The Marvels was officially announced, fans have clamored to see Valkyrie and Carol share the screen in a meaningful way.

"And then, of course, there's the Brie/Tessa Thompson love going on online which is fun to see," Captain Marvel producer Mary Livanos told ComicBook.com in 2019."It's so charming and so fun to see the actor's themselves get excited about the potential mashup so that as a creative makes you start thinking."

What do you think of the newest teaser for The Marvels? Do you hope Valkyrie appears in the film? Share your thoughts with us in the comments below!

As mentioned above, The Marvels will be released exclusively in theaters on November 10th.

Star Wars Actor Ahmed Best Wants To Play Blue Marvel https://comicbook.com/marvel/news/star-wars-actor-jar-jar-binks-ahmed-best-wants-to-play-blue-marvel/ Sat, 14 Oct 2023 02:02:00 +0000 Jamie Jirak 90499ad9-59f2-4c50-b17d-0432367177dc

Ahmed Best is known for playing Jar Jar Binks in Star Wars, and the actor recently returned to the franchise as Jedi Master Kelleran Beq. Like many actors, Best is interested in being in more than one Disney franchise. The actor previously expressed interest in playing Mister Fantastic, and now he's taken to social media with another casting idea: Blue Marvel. Blue Marvel/Adam Bernard Brashear was first introduced by Marvel Comics in 2008 in Adam: Legend of the Blue Marvel #1. The character was created by Kevin Grevioux and Mat Brome, and has many powers including superhuman strength, speed, and mental perception.

"I think I would make a dope #bluemarvel @kevinfeige @marvel @marvelstudios. As my mother would say #manifesting LOL. #starwars #jedi #kelleranbeq #prequels #themarvels #jarjarbinks #themandalorian illustration by @dieselfunk," Best shared on Instagram. You can check out the post below:

Ahmed Best Recalls "Lowest Point" After Playing Jar Jar Binks:

Recently, Best spoke with The Guardian about his Star Wars history and his appearance on the new podcast, The Redemption of Jar Jar Binks. Best has spoken before about contemplating suicide, and during the interview, he recalled the moment he stood on the Brooklyn Bridge as he thought about taking his own life.

"I'll show all of you. I'll show you what you're doing to me. And when I'm gone, then you'll feel exactly what I went through," the actor remembered thinking. "It was terrible," Best explained. "It was the lowest I've been in my life," he added, saying he struggled to leave his home at the time.

Best added of getting to save Grogu in The Mandalorian, "It really felt good ... As an artist, I lost my confidence for so many years, but The Mandalorian gave me that affirmation of 'You were always doing the right thing ... It wasn't you.'"

Will Ahmed Best Ever Play Jar Jar Binks Again?

Despite the Jar Jar Binks backlash, Best has said he'd be open to playing the Gungan again. "I would return as #jarjarbinks but it really depends on the story," the actor tweeted when a fan asked about a possible return back in 2020. Some fans thought he might pop up in Obi-Wan Kenobi last year, but it did not end up happening.

"Not as far as I know, no. I haven't been asked," Best shared with Jamie Stangroom's YouTube channel about being involved in the Ewan McGregor-led series. "I just don't know. To be completely honest I think Jar Jar is something Lucasfilm are trying to move away from, I'm not going to hold my breath for a Jar Jar cameo in Obi-Wan but you know, who knows."

Loki Episode 2 Easter Egg Pays Tribute to Marvel Comics' History https://comicbook.com/tv-shows/news/loki-episode-2-easter-egg-goodman-productions-marvel-comics-history/ Sat, 14 Oct 2023 01:49:00 +0000 Jenna Anderson 1abdcae1-bc2b-4cd3-8b79-b18f7be3d592

There has been a lot to process in the sophomore season of Loki, as the adventures of Loki (Tom Hiddleston) and the TVA send shockwaves throughout the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Although only two episodes of the season have aired thus far, those installments have been jam-packed with surprising moments and pieces of Marvel lore. That includes one blink-and-you'll-miss-it Easter egg in the show's second episode, which has ties to the larger history of Marvel Comics itself. Spoilers for the second episode of Loki Season 2 below! Only look if you want to know!

The episode opens with Loki and Mobius (Owen Wilson) traveling to the 1980s to find Hunter X-5 (Rafael Casal), who has gone off-mission and is operating as an actor named Brad Wolfe. Loki and Mobius track down X-5/Brad at the premiere of his latest movie, Zaniac -- and a brief glimpse at the film's poster drops a surprising Easter egg. Zaniac, as well as the Phone Ranger film also advertised nearby, are both produced by Goodman Productions, which is a nod to original Timely Comics publisher Martin Goodman.

Who Is Marvel's Martin Goodman?

The real-life Martin Goodman was instrumental in the Golden Age of comics and pulp magazines, working on the distribution side. In 1939, he formed Timely Publications, which ultimately led to him commissioning Marvel Comics #1, the very first story involving Human Torch and Namor the Sub-Mariner. By the early 1940s, Goodman created Timely Comics, Inc., which eventually became renamed Marvel Comics. In the decades that followed, he also worked on Red Circle Comics (which would later become Archie's Dark Circle Comics), as well as a number of magazines.

Goodman also had a personal connection to Stan Lee, who was the cousin of his wife, Jean Davis. Lee initially got hired to Timely as an editorial assistant, before being promoted to editor and becoming a mainstay at Marvel.

Each week we will review, breakdown, and discuss the latest installment of the new Marvel series immediately after the episode's conclusion! The new episodes will be broadcast live on the Phase Zero channel on YouTube before being made available on all major podcast platforms. Phase Zero will begin its 5-minute timer to start the live show at 9:45pm ET on Thursday, October 5. Deadpool 3 Star Hugh Jackman Celebrates 55th Birthday https://comicbook.com/marvel/news/deadpool-3-star-hugh-jackman-celebrates-55th-birthday/ Sat, 14 Oct 2023 01:05:00 +0000 Jamie Jirak 7b5b2b9e-3fb5-454b-80ad-21496fe5a9eb

Happy Birthday, Hugh Jackman! The actor known best for playing Wolverine turned 55 on October 12th. Despite the fact that the Deadpool 3 production remains on hold during the SAG strike, Jackman still spent his special day with co-star Ryan Reynolds and Reynolds' wife, Gossip Girl star Blake Lively. According to People, the trio was spotted walking together in New York on Thursday morning. Today, Jackman took to Instagram to thank fans for the birthday wishes and show off his birthday dinner.

"Thank you ALL for the birthday love!!! I'm reading your messages, seeing the special videos and experiencing all the feels," Jackman wrote. According to Page Six, Jackman was spotted sharing his birthday meal with family and close friends, including his estranged wife Deborra-Lee Furness. You can check out his post below:;

Hugh Jackman On Working With Ryan Reynolds:

Jackman occasionally talks about the intense training process that goes into creating his Wolverine body. Last year, the actor even shared a throwback photo to his Wolverine days, and joked that the man in the photo (himself) looked like he was in "serious pain." In a recent interview with The Guardian earlier this year, Jackman talked about playing Wolverine again in Deadpool 3 and gave a hilarious reason for wanting to work with Reynolds.

"No, I was OK," Jackman said of letting go of the iconic Marvel role. "I wasn't tortured by it. When people would ask me [to reprise the role] - including Ryan, every five seconds - I was like: 'I'm done.'" He added of returning for Deadpool 3, "I just wanted to do it and I felt it in my gut ... I get to punch the sh*t out of Ryan Reynolds every day."

What Is Deadpool 3 About?

Deadpool 3 will be directed by Shawn Levy, with a script written by Bob's Burgers' Wendy Molyneaux and Lizzie Molyneaux-Loeglin, with Deadpool and Deadpool 2 writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick reportedly also returning to contribute to the script. Not much is known about the script, but there has been a lot of speculation and exciting teases.

In addition to Reynolds in the titular role, Deadpool 3 will also star Hugh Jackman as Wolverine, Morena Baccarin as Vanessa Carlysle, Leslie Uggams as Blind Al, Karan Soni as Dopinder, Stefan Kapi?i? as Piotr Rasputin/Colossus, and Emma Corrin and Matthew Macfadyen in currently-unknown roles.

Stay tuned for more updates about Deadpool 3. Currently, the film is expected to be released on May 3, 2024.

The Suicide Squad's David Dastmalchian Becomes Brand Ambassador for Casket Company https://comicbook.com/irl/news/the-suicide-squad-david-dastmalchian-brand-ambassador-casket-company/ Fri, 13 Oct 2023 23:07:00 +0000 Jenna Anderson cd12f380-cb6e-4833-acac-934494b93f6e

David Dastmalchian might be best known for his comic work on Count Crowley, as well as his eclectic filmography in projects like The Suicide Squad, Dune, and The Dark Knight, but it looks like he has found a new spooky occupation. On Friday, it was announced (via The Hollywood Reporter) that Dastmalchian will be the official brand ambassador for Titan Casket, serving as the face of the company and appearing in marketing materials. Titan Casket specializes in the online sale of caskets, and also helps family members with end-of-life planning.

"It's an honor to represent Titan Casket, a brand that's not only making end-of-life planning more accessible and affordable, but also initiating crucial conversations around it," Dastmalchian said in a statement. "If I had known about Titan Casket and the right to buy my own casket, I would have been spared some heartache. The savings, convenience, and education that Titan offers while purchasing a casket is so important, and normalizing end of life planning is an important conversation I look forward to having in the months to come."

Which Superheroes Has David Dastmalchian Played?

Dastmalchian has had a role in a number of superhero projects, including appearing in the DC multiverse as Thomas Schiff in The Dark Knight, Abra Kadabra in The Flash, and Polka Dot Man in The Suicide Squad. He also portrayed Kurt in Marvel's Ant-Man movies, as well as the alien Veb in the recent Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania.

"Filming The Suicide Squad had a big impact on me as both a human being, but also how I look at storytelling," Dastmalchian revealed to ComicBook.com in an interview earlier this year. "But I would say the biggest influence of that experience was just getting to be in the presence of James Gunn for five months of making a movie and seeing the way a storyteller, at that level, operates and brings both heart, pathos, comedy, and action into this beautiful recipe. There's a lot that James and Peyton have in common. They create a space where you feel safe to creatively take risks. I felt incredibly encouraged. And they're friends! There's so many things about the way they work that is in line with my favorite way of working, which is, there's an incredible story with incredible characters with an incredible script. They've created this incredible playground for me to come in and then just create."

"I was coming off of a very physically and emotionally exhausting, dramatic performance where I felt very tired, and I felt like acting was really hard at that moment," Dastmalchian continued. "I'd forgotten, for a second, about just being present, being on my mark, breathing, looking at the people around me, letting the words come out of me. And Veb just started to bubble to the surface. And everyone who knows me really well has told me, in one way or another, that Veb is me."

Will David Dastmalchian Return to the DCU?

With The Suicide Squad's James Gunn now co-leading DC Studios, fans have naturally wondered if Dastmalchian might end up reprising his role as Polka Dot Man in some capacity. In a separate interview with ComicBook.com, Dastmalchian revealed that he's open to the possibility -- as well as possibly playing a different character entirely.

"Being on set with James Gunn was one of the greatest experiences of my life," Dastmalchian said. "If it's the one chance that I got to do that, then I'll savor and be grateful for that for the rest of my life. But if there is some miraculous way that he, in all of his brilliance and imagination, finds for Abner or any other character that he thinks I might be right to portray, to come into that world, I'm there in a second."

What do you think of David Dastmalchian becoming the face of Titan Casket? Share your thoughts with us in the comments below!

Loki Costume Designer Talks Working With New Directors:

This month, ComicBook.com had the chance to chat with costume designer Christine Wada about her creations, and she revealed what it was like working with new directors for Season 2.

"I just feel like this team, even with the different directors who are so respectful of what was built in Season One, and just so collaborative, that it didn't really change it," Wada shared of her Season 2 experience. "And I think that the vision has always been really solid, and [producer] Kevin Wright has always had this incredible big-picture mind for it, and then Tom [Hiddleston] as well. So it just worked. They seamlessly folded in."

Marvel Studios' Kevin Feige Says MCU Has "Barely Scratched the Surface" of Marvel Potential https://comicbook.com/movies/news/marvel-studios-kevin-feige-mcu-marvel-potential/ Fri, 13 Oct 2023 21:29:00 +0000 Jenna Anderson 8c27dd5e-94e1-424f-9f2c-2441a4446848

The Marvel Cinematic Universe has remained a cultural juggernaut for years, helping introduce audiences all over the world to some of Marvel Comics' heroes and villains. Even amid a steady stream of blockbuster movies and Disney+ television shows, and a number of new projects on the horizon, it sounds like Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige has a unique outlook on the franchise's grand storytelling. In a recent interview with Variety, Feige reflected on the MCU's run thus far, and argued that the saga has "barely scratched the surface" of the stories that have been told in Marvel Comics.

"The great thing about Marvel truly is how many wonderful, interesting characters we have in the comics -- they've been at it for 85 years," Feige explained. "Even after 32 movies, it feels like we've barely scratched the surface."

What Is the Next Avengers Movie?

During 2022's San Diego-Comic Con, Marvel Studios confirmed that the current "Multiverse Saga" of titles will culminate in two Avengers movies -- Avengers: The Kang Dynasty and Avengers: Secret Wars. Despite the film's newest release date being four years away, the fervor around Secret Wars has already begun, with fans eager to see if and how the film adapts the 1984 and 2015 comic storylines of the same name,

"Not every film in the Infinity Saga focused on the Infinity Stones or Thanos, and it'll be the same across 5 and 6," Feige previously told Entertainment Weekly. "But we're gearing up. People will get a taste of this in a big way in Quantumania as we lead to Avengers: Secret Wars, which I'm extremely excited for. You know, I'm coming up on 23 years at Marvel. That's a long time. It's not quite half my life, but it's almost half my life. [Laughs] Many of us have been together for a decade or more. And we only do it because we are so excited and in love with the potential for what we can do ahead. The storylines that weave together through Phase 5 and 6 into Secret Wars and the opportunities that the multiverse brings storytelling-wise, it's a whole new aspect to the MCU. "

Will There Be Less Marvel Disney+ Series?

As some Star Wars and Marvel shows have debuted on the platform to lower viewership and less-positive ratings, Disney CEO Bob Iger hinted that the company might be scaling back on these original streaming projects. Recent reports have also confirmed that Marvel Studios will be changing its television strategy, employing proper showrunners instead of "head writers", and adding more steps to the development process of potential series.

"There have been some disappointments we would have liked some of our more recent releases to perform better," Iger explained in an interview with CNBC. "It's reflective not as a problem from a personnel perspective, but I think in our in our zeal to basically grow our content significantly to serve mostly our streaming offerings, we ended up taxing our people way beyond -- in terms of their time and their focus -- way beyond where they had been... To try and make Disney+ worthwhile, we made decisions that hurt other parts of the business. That's likely true at least in part, but it's also something that isn't unique to Disney. With blockbuster box office hauls depressed across the board, it's hard not to imagine that part of the problem is that the studios are so eager for a return to "normal" that they haven't figured out a way to monetize the shorter exclusivity windows and higher overall volume of content creation that have been hallmarks of the streaming era."

Loki Shares Sylvie Season 2 Poster https://comicbook.com/tv-shows/news/loki-season-2-sylvie-poster/ Fri, 13 Oct 2023 21:07:00 +0000 Aaron Perine 6e0a9636-690b-49d2-8030-4a0434bc980e

Loki Season 2 just gave Sylvie her own poster after a big return in Episode 2. Marvel Studios is in the midst of Loki's second run on Disney+ and decided to celebrate Sophia Di Martino's character. Last night saw her reunited with Tom Hiddleston's trickster god after explosive Loki Season 1 finale. Sylvie might have started a new life of sorts. But, she's back in the picture and ready to listen. In the poster, it seems the music of the 1970s might play a role for the enchantress as Loki Season 2 moves along. There are a bunch of musical selections behind her in this poster, but also a warning about being careful what you wish for.

The end of Episode 2 saw Sylvie contemplating her hard won "freedom" after seeing Loki again. She famously ended He Who Remains's reign atop the TVA and sent the institution into freewill. Now, with everything in flux, Loki asked her for help in preventing another multiversal war. Things went badly protecting the timelines and Sylvie argues the entire TVA needs to be burnt down. As she portals back to her new home in Oklahoma, she ponders the entire situation to the sounds of Janis Joplin's "Kozmic Blues." That needle drop and this poster are hints that music is probably going to play a big role in Loki Season 2.

What's Waiting For Sylvie In Season 2

Sylvie is back in the fold for Loki Season 2, and she's going to have to help the TVA save as many people as she can. Vanity Fair actually spoke to Sophia Di Martino about the end of Season 1. Yes, He Who Remains is "gone", but that doesn't mean our favorite characters are out of the woods yet. As viewers just saw, there are members of the TVA trying to continue his work pruning timelines. In addition, this conflict is very personal for Sylvie. While she doesn't want to be directly involved, it looks like she's going to have no choice as the Loki Season 2 ramps up even further.

"She's done it and she's sort of waiting for the relief and the release and something to happen to make her feel a tiny bit better about things," di Martino told the outlet. "And it just doesn't come, and she's left questioning everything. I think [regret] definitely comes at some point. I'm sure it will, because the whole conversation that's just happened with Loki is almost like a misunderstanding. It's just a bad bit of communication in a way, and then she's left with the reality of what she's done. There's some big feels."

"Marvel Studios fan-favorite Tom Hiddleston stars in Loki Season 2, returning as the titular God of Mischief for another round of time-traveling hijinx on Disney+ on October 6th. Loki is once again joined by Mobius (Owen Wilson) as the two attempt to keep the timelines intact. After the events of Season 1 saw his variant Sylvie (Sophia Di Martino) kill He Who Remains and unleash the wrath of Kang the Conqueror upon the Multiverse, Loki must once again embark on an adventure to keep reality from collapsing."

"Loki was last seen in the post-credits scene of Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, where he and Mobius were keeping tabs on one of Kang's mysterious variants. Loki Season 2 will continue the story of the Multiverse Saga in the Marvel Cinematic Universe."

Loki: What Is the Song at the End of Season 2 Episode 2? https://comicbook.com/tv-shows/news/loki-season-2-episode-2-song-janis-joplin/ Fri, 13 Oct 2023 18:26:00 +0000 Aaron Perine 7f9a9cf5-ed24-415a-a34e-950b35c142f7

Loki Season 2 Episode 2 ends with one of Marvel's needle drop moments. The song that plays at the end of Loki Season 2 Episode 2 is Janis Joplin's "Kozmic Blues." Released in 1969, the track sees Joplin breaking away from Big Brother and the Holding Company. That little detail probably helps explain why the Loki team chose this song to have Sylvie looking out into the distance with. "Kozmic Blues" also works double duties as the lyrics are mostly about time and regret. Sylvie made some big choices at the end of Loki Season 1 and now she's had some time to think about the future Loki warned about.

In "Kozmic Blues," Joplin is meditating on why people drift apart. The lyrics include statements like, "Time keeps moving on / friends, they turn away. / I keep moving on / But I never found out why." This sentiment seems to match up pretty well with Loki and Sylvie's dynamic after the events of Loki Season 1. She killed He Who Remains and pushed her fellow Trickster God away. Now, cosmic forces are pulling them back together again. In that moment, it looks like Sylvie is contemplating walking away from the TVA again after their failure to protect branched timelines. What she will choose is impossible to know.

Loki Returns For Season 2

For Marvel Studios, Loki has been a constant bright spot. So, when the time for Season 2 came around, there was no question that a lot of the band was going to reunite. ComicBook.com spoke to Christine Wada, costume designer for Loki, about the allure of a trip back to the TVA on Disney+.

"First of all, the story really never ended in Season One," Wada told us. "So I had to complete the journey with the team. But of course, I really do think that this team and this job is just incredibly special. I think that probably starts from the pages and Tom [Hiddleston] and just the dedication everybody has to building this story and the quirkiness of it ... there was no way I couldn't. I knew it wasn't going to be the exact same thing. I knew it would be just expanding on the original vision. I mean, I think the best way to describe it is, I never really thought that this would be Season Two. I've just seen it as Part Two."

Werewolf by Night in Color Trailer Released by Marvel Studios https://comicbook.com/marvel/news/werewolf-by-night-in-color-trailer-released-by-marvel-studios/ Fri, 13 Oct 2023 17:56:00 +0000 Jamie Jirak 28cbc1fa-a3db-4bc9-91d3-62c01641631d

As 2023 winds down, there's still some exciting Marvel Studios content to look forward to. Loki's second season has four episodes to go and The Marvels is hitting theaters in November. For those looking for some MCU to enjoy during spooky season, Werewolf by Night is being re-released on Disney+ in color. The "Special Presentation" was helmed by Oscar-winning composer Michael Giacchino, and hit Disney+ last year in black and white. Today, Marvel Studios shared a new trailer for the updated, colorful version.

"In 1 week, Marvel Studios' Special Presentation: Werewolf by Night in Color arrives on Disney+," Marvel teased. The trailer promises Werewolf by Night in color will be "more terrifying" and "more gruesome." You can check out the trailer below:

"You're always thinking about, what are we accentuating here? You can boost every color, but that's not really the answer. It's about boosting certain colors, and it's really a scene-by-scene choice that you have to make. It's not just a global thing that you can put a filter on and go, OK, it's done," Giacchino explained to Marvel.com. "You must go in almost shot by shot. We spent a lot of time in a dark room at Disney looking at every single shot, one by one, and going, you know what? That's great, but maybe a little more contrast and push the red a little bit."

How Does Werewolf by Night Connect to the MCU?

Giacchino previously revealed he purposefully crafted the special as a one-shot with zero connections to the wider MCU. However, the filmmaker has also said he knows where the special sits on the MCU timeline if Marvel Studios ever asks him to return.

"I have a very specific idea of how this fits into everything, but those are all discussions yet to be with everyone else at Marvel, Kevin and Stephen and Brian Gay and all, everybody else. These are the discussions that I do hope to have," the filmmaker told Collider. "But in my mind, because you do have to have some sort of reference when you're making something like this, and whether it's just for yourself or to explain to somebody else a motivation or a character. But as I said, it's my idea of how this fits in. It's my version of where this all goes because I did need that in order to of push this through. But it wasn't something that we or I felt needed to be a part of this. It was just more for me as I was making it."

Werewolf by Night in color is coming to Disney+ on October 20th.

Loki Season 2 Funko Pops Add Ke Huy Quan's Ouroboros aka O.B. https://comicbook.com/tv-shows/news/loki-season-2-funko-pops-ke-huy-quan-ob/ Fri, 13 Oct 2023 15:40:00 +0000 Sean Fallon 475febaf-2f3c-4270-8eed-416d43d86641 psx-20231013-113708.jpg

The second season of Loki is now streaming on Disney+, and that means there are new Marvel Funko Pops to be had. Last week, Funko kicked off the collection of Pop figures with Loki and Mobius in a TVA Temporal Core suit. Today, they're adding Ouroboros aka O.B., which is especially exciting for anyone that's been following Ke Huy Quan's career resurgence. There was a a bit of a gap between his performance as Short Round in Indiana Jones to his Oscar-winning role in Everything Everywhere all at Once, but now he's one of the hottest actors in Hollywood so Marvel came a-calling.

You should be able to pre-order the Loki OB Funko Pop here at Entertainment Earth, here at Hot Topic and here on Amazon at some point today, October 13th. While you're at it, make sure to check out the NYCC 2023 and Scare Fair Funko Pop exclusives that also launched today.

Pre-orders for the first wave of Loki Funko Pops are available here at Entertainment Earth, here at Hot Topic and here on Amazon at some point today.here at Hot Topic and here on Amazon. New episodes of Loki air each Thursday, so we don't expect to see additions during Funko's weekly Wednesday drop events. Odds are they will continue to arrive on Fridays after a new episode airs.

How Ke Huy Quan Joined Loki:

Loki executive producer Kevin Wright recently shared with Variety the story of how Quan was cast as O.B.

"We were in London, so I had at least some version of our scripts. The way the process works, they're always being rewritten, but O.B. was in there, and his introduction scene was almost exactly as originally written," Wright explained. "I would like to say it was in early spring, which was maybe just two months before we started shooting. We were casting, and Everything Everywhere All at Once was playing in L.A. and in New York, but it hadn't gone nationwide yet. I think it was going the very next week. We had gotten a call from our casting director who said, 'Hey, I'm about to put together a list for O.B. - just initial thoughts. But before I do that, I really think you guys should meet Ke, and I think it should be Ke. I think you guys should meet with him quick, because probably by Monday, he's going to have a lot of offers for different things.'

"So that Friday, myself, Justin, and Aaron, two of our directors, had gotten on a Zoom with Ke. We pitched him the show and this character. We shared that introduction scene with him and maybe the full script. And then we called in the big guns that Monday; Kevin Feige got on the phone with him and said, 'Ke, I know you read the script. I know you talked to the guys. We really think you should do this. I really want you to join the Marvel family.' And he had already made up his mind over the weekend. It was like, 'I'm there. I've been a huge fan of this for a long time.'"

Will Loki Get a Season 3?

In a recent interview with ComicBook.com, Loki producer Kevin Wright addressed the possibility of whether or not the show could end up getting a third season -- and teased that either way, the narrative of the show will continue.

"We are certainly thinking about how we can continue to tell TVA and Loki-based stories," Wright revealed. "What I would say is season one and season two were always conceived as two chapters of the same book. We want to close this book and I think there's a lot more books on the shelf, though."

What is Loki Season 2 about?

Loki Season 2 on Disney+ continues Loki's redemptive adventures across the multiverse after his death in Avengers: Infinity War and escape from time in Avengers: Endgame. After failing to stop Sylvie, one of Loki's variants, from killing He Who Remains, a Kang variant who had been preserving the Sacred Timeline through the Time Variance Authority (TVA), Loki must now reckon with the recreated multiverse. According to Marvel Studios' official synopsis, "Loki Season 2 picks up in the aftermath of the shocking season finale when Loki finds himself in a battle for the soul of the Time Variance Authority. Along with Mobius, Hunter B-15 and a team of new and returning characters, Loki navigates an ever-expanding and increasingly dangerous multiverse in search of Sylvie, Judge Renslayer, Miss Minutes and the truth of what it means to possess free will and glorious purpose."

Loki Season 2: New Episode Features an Eternals Easter Egg https://comicbook.com/tv-shows/news/loki-season-2-eternals-easter-egg/ Fri, 13 Oct 2023 15:08:00 +0000 Aaron Perine bf712dcd-be38-46aa-91ab-f84d7d33f014

Loki Season 2's latest episode featured an Eternals Easter egg. In Episode 2 of the Disney+ series, Loki and Mobius walk right by a poster of The Great Kingo's movie. This sequence is set during the late 1970s, so this is Kumail Nanjiani's character popping-up. Back in Eternals, Kingo revealed that he used his long lifespan to play a family of Bollywood stars across time. All he had to do is phase one identity out and then adopt the moniker of a descendant and he was good to go. Over the course of Phase 4-5, fans have been craving a little more continuity in the MCU. So, a lot of them were very pleased to see the Kingo nod in Loki Season 2.

While Kingo might be the most "famous" movie star in the MCU's universe, this episode was all about Brad Wolfe playing Zaniac. (Apologies to Kevin Bacon, who is basically immortalized through his hysterical cameo during The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special.) It's clear this season of Loki is putting more of an emphasis on time travel than different universes. So, it could be the case that there will be more nods to the MCU's past in Season 2 of Loki. After all Episode 2 also brought a hysterical moment of Loki recapping 2012's The Avengers as well.

Has Kingo Met Other MCU Characters?

marvel-eternals-kingo.jpg
(Photo: Marvel Studios)

As fans know, in Eternals, Kingo made reference to some encounters with other superpowers individuals. The heroes had to keep a low-profile after they disbanded though. Hence, Kingo becoming a Bollywood star. Back in 2021, ComicBook.com spoke to Kumail Nanjiani about where his character has been in the MCU and he didn't shy away from the question. It feels like there were some backstory things that didn't make it to the screen when the movie released.

"Yes," Nanjiani replied when asked if they had developed that part of Kingo's history. "Chloe [Zhao] had it all mapped out, and she had a very specific sense of... Because the thing is, Eternals have sort of been in hiding, right? So they haven't been going around talking to Iron-Man and Captain America and all those people. They've been pretending to be normal human beings. But it makes sense that my character would have met another character who's not from Earth either. I'm trying to be vague. I don't know what I'm allowed to say or not. So I think that was all part of the stuff, so that even though Eternals really is a standalone movie, you want to feel the presence, and the reality of, the rest of the MCU around it. And Chloe is such a nerd with an encyclopedic knowledge of Marvel and the MCU. So she was really excited about dropping these references in."

When Will The Eternals Return?

eternals-cast.png
(Photo: Marvel Studios)

While it is fun to see Marvel acknowledge Eternals again, the question of a sequel or anything of the sort is kind of up in the air. Critical response was not great to Chloe Zhao's Marvel Movie. While the streaming numbers for Eternals have surprised a lot of fans, the future of these characters seems kind of murky. (Along with the acknowledgement that it came out while theaters were still a risk not many theater-goers were willing to make!)

During an appearance on Josh Horowitz's Happy Sad Confused podcast, Nanjiani shared his feelings about the reaction to Eternals. "I love Eternals. I think it's fantastic. It did bum me out that it was sort of divisive," Nanjiani told the host. "Chloe [Zhao] made a very, very ambitious huge movie that's very different from most comic book movies, you know, she went for a really really high bar."

What Else Is On-Deck For Loki Season 2?

"Marvel Studios fan-favorite Tom Hiddleston stars in Loki Season 2, returning as the titular God of Mischief for another round of time-traveling hijinx on Disney+ on October 6th. Loki is once again joined by Mobius (Owen Wilson) as the two attempt to keep the timelines intact. Black Widow Is the Latest Marvel Hero to Get Their Very Own Venom Symbiote https://comicbook.com/comics/news/black-widow-latest-marvel-hero-venom-symbiote/ Fri, 13 Oct 2023 14:18:00 +0000 Timothy Adams ef46f53d-fbce-406d-ac2d-7231a2f2d4aa

There has been a long list of Marvel heroes and villains to don an alien Venom symbiote, and Black Widow is the latest to add her name to their ranks. After Spider-Man discarded the alien symbiote, Eddie Brock bonded with it to become Venom. Spider-Man and Venom had a long, bloody rivalry, but nowadays they both work together as heroes. The Venom mythos has also undergone a major transformation in recent years, with Eddie Brock and his son Dylan sharing the mantle of Lethal Protector. The Venom symbiote has produced several offspring, including the psychopath Carnage, but the latest has formed a union with the Avenger Black Widow.

WARNING: The following article contains spoilers for Venom #26. Continue reading at your own risk!

Venom #26 comes from the creative team of Torunn Gr?nbekk, Julius Ohta, Frank D'Armata, and VC's Clayton Cowles. It finds Black Widow on the hunt for a terrorist group called Noname, which is behind attacks at various Alchemax sites. While interrogating a former friend named Keith Walken, we get our first glimpse at the symbiote that has bonded with Black Widow. Another young kid named Bren Waters is the new host to the Toxin symbiote, and he and Venom run into Black Widow inside Venom's hivemind. Natasha Romanoff's symbiote takes the shape of tiny black widow spiders, making it seem like they are everywhere at once.

black-widow-venom-symbiote-reveal.jpg
(Photo: Marvel Comics)

What does Black Widow's Venom look like?

Black Widow shows off her Venom symbiote in a full-page spread in Venom #26. Her costume pretty much stays the same, except now her face is covered in a Spider-Man/Venom-style black mask with red eyes. The color red is also found in her ponytail, wrist gauntlets, and spider emblem on her chest. We learn that her symbiote is a newborn, so their bond will be a lot different than the one between Eddie and Dylan Brock and Venom.

After Toxin is attacked, Venom and Black Widow decide to team up to save him and take down Noname. Black Widow could make for an interesting addition to the Venom corner of the Marvel Universe. We've had events like Venomverse and Venomized where other Marvel heroes have joined with a symbiote, but those were eventually reversed. It's possible Black Widow and her symbiote will remain together for the foreseeable future.

What do you think about Black Widow becoming a Venom? Let us know your thoughts in the comments!

Loki Season 2 Just Referenced a Marvel Hero With Only 3 Comic Appearances https://comicbook.com/tv-shows/news/loki-season-2-easter-egg-phone-ranger-marvel-hero-comic-appearances/ Fri, 13 Oct 2023 03:16:00 +0000 Jenna Anderson e1a77590-d027-4bb0-a3f1-18a97f6bd8db

The second season of Loki is underway, and it is delivering some surprising developments with regards to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. With Avengers: The Kang Dynasty and Avengers: Secret Wars on the horizon, Loki's new episodes are definitely upping the ante -- while also folding in some lesser-known parts of Marvel lore. The season's second episode is no exception, as it briefly involves a character who has only had a handful of Marvel Comics appearances. Spoilers for Episode 2 of Loki Season 2 below! Only look if you want to know!

The episode opens with Loki (Tom Hiddleston) and Mobius (Owen Wilson) tracking down Hunter X-5 (Rafael Casal), who is revealed to have gone off-mission from the TVA. X-5 is now operating as Brad Wolfe, an actor starring in 80s films like Zaniac. While at the Zaniac movie premiere, a poster can very briefly be seen for Phone Ranger, referencing the obscure Marvel hero of the same name.

Who Is Marvel's Phone Ranger?

Created by Kurt Busiek and James Fry in 1985's Marvel Age Annual #1, Phone Ranger is the superhero name of a mysterious man named only A.G. Bell (a play, of course, on telephone inventor Alexander Graham Bell). Bell is initially a phone repairman who accidentally discovers a tiny alien race, the Seltas, in one of the phones he is fixing. Through a series of events, Bell recreates the Selta's technology, and uses it to interface with any and all communication devices. Donning a costume and the name Phone Ranger, he very briefly fights crime.

Phone Ranger then nearly gets killed in an assassination attempt, carried out in a battle with the Lethal Legion. Unsurprisingly, the giant phone on his costume helps save him. Phone Ranger very briefly gets arrested, but is given amnesty after Captain America is arrested.

Loki: How Zaniac's Introduction Differs From Marvel Comics https://comicbook.com/tv-shows/news/loki-how-zaniacs-introduction-differs-from-marvel-comics/ Fri, 13 Oct 2023 01:46:00 +0000 Jenna Anderson 78653501-c3be-4e62-90c7-3bb1981a73a9

The sophomore season of Loki is giving Marvel fans a lot to chew on, as it continues the offbeat story of the TVA and their fight to save the Sacred Timeline. In the marketing for the show's newest episodes, one element has caught the eye of Marvel Comics fans -- posters teasing Zaniac, a relatively-obscure character from the Marvel mythos. As it turns out, Zaniac is actually pretty relevant to the plot of Loki Season 2's second episode -- and a little different from his comic counterpart. Spoilers for Episode 2 of Loki Season 2 below! Only look if you want to know!

In the episode, Loki (Tom Hiddleston) and Mobius (Owen Wilson) track down Hunter X-5 (Rafael Casal), who was part of the horde of TVA agent hunting for Sylvie (Sophia Di Martino). They find X-5 in an unexpected place -- at the premiere of an upcoming movie. As it turns out, X-5 got comfortable on Earth and stopped hunting for Sylvie, instead becoming an actor named Brad Wolfe, who stars in a monster movie titled Zaniac. Unfortunately (at least, across the second episode), X-5/Wolfe does not turn into the green-hued monster that he is often portrayed as in the comics.

Who Is Zaniac in Marvel Comics?

This differs a little bit from how Zaniac, who was created by Doug Moench and Keith Pollard in 1982's Thor #319, is initially folded into Marvel Comics. Zaniac is a entity working at the behest of Dormammu, who arrives on Earth and begins possessing various human bodies in the late 1800s. The first host of Zaniac ends up being none other than Tom Malverne, who goes on to become the infamous serial killer Jack the Ripper.

Decades later, Zaniac possesses an actor named Brad Wolfe, who just so happens to be filming a Zaniac-themed slasher movie on the University of Chicago's former Manhattan Project testing ground. As a result, Wolfe gains superhuman abilities (including the ability to conjure knives out of energy), but descends into madness. He becomes an adversary of Thor and his human alter-ego, Dr. Donald Blake. Eventually, Thor worked alongside a TVA agent named Justice Peace to stop Zaniac once and for all, traveling back in time and killing the entity just before he took a new host.

Loki Season 2 Takes a Shot at Martin Scorsese "Cinema" Comments https://comicbook.com/tv-shows/news/loki-season-2-takes-a-shot-at-martin-scorsese-cinema-comments/ Fri, 13 Oct 2023 01:46:00 +0000 Jenna Anderson 58ae201a-7cc6-46e1-b5f1-3518c6070936

Loki's sophomore season is now underway, with its second episode premiering on Disney+ on Thursday night. The series is continuing to expand upon the mythos of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, while laying the groundwork for the franchise's future superhero stories. The second episode of Loki Season 2 was no exception, introducing an unconventional subplot -- while also possibly poking fun at one of the biggest criticisms of the saga. Spoilers for Episode 2 of Loki Season 2 below! Only look if you want to know!

Much of the plot of the episode concerned Loki (Tom Hiddleston) and Mobius (Owen Wilson) tracking down Hunter X-5 (Rafael Casal), who had last been seen in the hunt to find Sylvie (Sophia Di Martino). As it turns out, X-5 had actually been operating as a human on Earth for a while -- more specifically, Brad Wolfe, an actor who stars in the Zaniac movies. Throughout the episode, X-5/Wolfe seems to be searching for feedback on Zaniac, and at one point refers to his work as "cinema." While this moment is brief, it probably caught the attention of fans who are already familiar with acclaimed director Martin Scorsese's real-world comments about the MCU and franchise media.

What Has Martin Scorsese Said About Marvel Movies?

Scorsese first became culturally tied to the MCU in 2019, when he argued in an interview that the movies are more akin to a theme park ride than "cinema", in terms of how they are manufactured and the emotions they seek to elicit from audiences. These initial comments provoked some spirited responses from fans of the franchise, as well as from a number of superhero actors. In the years since, and also as Scorsese has recently promoted his upcoming film Killers of the Flower Moon, he has doubled down on the sentiment, most recently arguing to GQ UK that the modern studio system is prioritizing "manufactured content" over true art.

"I do think that the manufactured content isn't really cinema," Scorsese said in part. "No, I don't want to say it. But what I mean is that, it's manufactured content. It's almost like AI making a film. And that doesn't mean that you don't have incredible directors and special effects people doing beautiful artwork. But what does it mean? What do these films - what will it give you? Aside from a kind of consummation of something and then eliminating it from your mind, your whole body, you know? So what is it giving you?"

Loki Season 2 Admits His Plan in The Avengers Was Terrible https://comicbook.com/marvel/news/loki-season-2-his-plan-in-the-avengers-terrible/ Fri, 13 Oct 2023 01:33:00 +0000 Spencer Perry f51e5f7e-db8c-431b-930b-5aa67007ceef

Potential Loki spoilers follow! Marvel Studios' Loki has been bending around space and time for a few episodes now, and the newest episode brings the character back to a pivotal moment in his life, when he tried to invade Earth with some aliens in The Avengers. Speaking with Mobius at a key moment in Loki season 2 episode 2, the trickster god recounts the events of the 2012 movie The Avengers...and seemingly admitted that it wasn't the best idea. As the pair are recounting how their intention to break a prisoner in an interrogation didn't go well, Loki adds:

"Do you remember that time I was so angry with my father and my brother, I went down to Earth and I held the whole of new York City hostage with an alien army? Tried to use the Mind Stone on Tony Stark. It didn't work, so I threw him off the building. I mean, let me tell you something. Wasn't tactical. I lost it. Sometimes our emotions get the better of us."

Like he said, in The Avengers Loki commanded an army of Chitauri and brainwashed humans (thanks to the Mind Stone) to open a portal and prepare the planet for invasion (the post-credit scene would reveal he did this not because of his own plans but at the behest of none other than Thanos, setting the stage for the larger Infinity Saga).

In the context of Loki season 2 though the version of Loki that we're watching is only a few days removed from the events of The Avengers, which makes this even funnier. As Marvel fans may recall, the version of Loki that first appeared in the TVA at the start of the Loki TV series was the one seen in Avengers: Endgame who teleported away from Stark Tower after the events of The Avengers. Though this version of the character isn't the one that experienced his next few MCU appearances, he did see what happened to him in the TVA's Time Theater, essentially fast-forwarding his character arc a bit; but in context, this Loki is just hours removed from what he did in The Avengers, which he now admits is "wasn't tacitcal."

Marvel Studios fan-favorite Tom Hiddleston stars in Loki Season 2, returning as the titular God of Mischief for another round of time-traveling hijinx on Disney+. Loki is once again joined by Mobius (Owen Wilson) as the two attempt to keep the timelines intact. When is the next episode of Loki season 2?

New episodes of Loki season 2 premiere Thursdays on Disney+, debuting on the streaming platform at 6 PM Pacific Time / 9 PM Eastern Time (which equates to 7 PM Mountain Time and 8 PM Central Time). Does Loki Season 2 Episode 2 Have a Post-Credits Scene? https://comicbook.com/marvel/news/does-loki-season-2-episode-2-post-credits-scene/ Fri, 13 Oct 2023 01:05:00 +0000 Spencer Perry c5e88df2-32b6-4b9f-a901-985815fa0298

The Loki season 2 premiere from Marvel Studios arrived last week on Disney+ and had a surprise for fans, a post-credits scene. After the first episode of Loki concluded and credits began to roll there was a little something extra. With that episode of Loki the scene was a pivotal one, revealing where Sylvie went after confronting He Who Remains at the end of time. Sylvie found herself in a branch of the timeline, now living in in Broxton, Oklahoma in 1982 (a key location from Marvel Comics lore that fans might recognize) wherein she takes a job at... McDonald's. This set the stage for Loki season 2 episode 2 in a big way, but the question remains:

Does Loki season 2 episode 2 have a post-credits scene?

Despite the first episode of Loki season 2 having a post-credits scene, the series does not continue the tradition with the latest episode. So, no, Loki season 2 episode 2 does not have a post-credits scene. The episode concludes, the credits roll, and that's all she wrote for this week's episode of Loki. Next week could be a different story however.

Loki Season 2 Episode 2 Recap With Spoilers https://comicbook.com/marvel/news/loki-season-2-episode-2-recap-with-spoilers/ Fri, 13 Oct 2023 01:01:00 +0000 Nicole Drum 98dc68c5-bec1-4ebb-9806-2092272968de

Loki returned last week and everyone's favorite villain on a redemption journey very quickly found himself dealing with much more than the warning of He Who Remains from the end of Season 1. Chaos has hit the Sacred Timeline with the wildly expanding branching timelines causing the Temporal Loom that powers everything to be near overloading -- and that could mean a catastrophic meltdown. We also found out, in a post credits scene that Sylvie has found herself in Broxton, Oklahoma in 1982 on a branched timeline and, well, everyone's looking for her and Loki and Mobius hope to find her first. Here's what happens in Loki Season 2 Episode 2. Brace yourself for glorious purpose: spoilers for the episode from here on out.

What Happens in Loki Season 2 Episode 2?

Loki and Mobius pop out in 1977 in London on the sacred timeline looking for Sylvie, but Loki says it doesn't feel right. It's too safe, so she's probably not there. They go to a premiere of Zaniac after getting a ping on X-5's TemPad and find him living a life as movie star Brad Wolfe. Brad tries to run but Mobius and Loki catch up to him. A chase ensues and he ends up in a rough part of town. Loki still catches him using his magic to corner him.

They take Brad back to the TVA. He had a modified TemPad and they take it to OB to check out. OB is focused on preventing a temporal meltdown and he gives them the TVA handbook and the weird TemPad and sends them off. B-15 looks for an update on the hunt for Renslayer and finds out that she wiped the data on her TemPad but they have information about the last message. Turns out Miss Minutes is helping Renslayer. Loki tells them about the recording he heard that made it sound like Renslayer was partners with He Who Remains. It also turns out that Casey knows what the modified TemPad does not do in terms of trackers and he takes it to further figure it out. Mobius and Loki go to talk to Brad as they want to know where Dox is, where Sylvie is, and what he did to the TemPad.

Brad isn't exactly cooperative and he tells Loki he is always the problem and that he's not actually special. He only makes everything worse for everyone including his mother and that he's a villain and should lean into that. Loki plays things up and tries to use it to scare Brad into talking, but it doesn't work. He just tells Loki he needs therapy. Mobius tries the approach of promising to send him back if he plays along but Brad tries to tell him that none of this (the TVA) is real and he has a real life on the timeline and he needs to wake up. He ends up goading Mobius into hitting him. Loki ends up worried about Mobius. They get pie and Mobius admits he lost it on Brad. Loki asks Mobius if he's ever wanted to visit his place on the timeline and see the life he was supposed to live before being taken to the TVA. Mobius is afraid his real life was something good and he doesn't want that to alter his current situation.

OB goes back to the Temporal Loom to try to stabilize it, but he finds that he can't get into things. Loki goes back to Brad determined to get him to talk and reveal where Sylvie is. They bring in some sort of torture device. Mobius gets locked out and Loki seems like he's going full villain on Brad, using the device while seemingly not understanding how it works. Brad says he doesn't know where Dox and the others are and Loki keeps pushing buttons. Brad starts to crack, telling Loki that he abandoned his mission, but Loki doesn't buy it. Brad finally cracks for real and tells Loki that Sylvie has a new life. He found her before abandoning his mission.

B-15 and Casey go to the Loom to help OB, but he is freaking out saying that they are all going to die because the blast doors won't open. Only the person who designed the doors can open them, but He Who Remains is dead so the need Miss Minutes to come back and override. They have to find a way in.

Brad takes Loki and Mobius to Broxton where Sylvie is. Loki finds her working at McDonald's. Loki and Sylvie talk on her break. He tells her that he was in the future and he saw her and he needs to know why. She doesn't believe him and doesn't want any part of saving the TVA. Inside, Mobius starts to think that Brad may have led them into a set up. Brad reveals that if they stay there, they'll all die. Sylvie enchants him to find out what he's talking about and it turns out that Dox is planning to bomb every branch on the timeline as Dox was never looking for Sylvie. She just wanted to prune every new timeline branch. Mobius, Loki, and Sylvie go find where Dox and her Minutemen have set up. Loki and Sylvie team up and stop her and she's apprehended, but many timelines have already been pruned and billions killed. They all go back to the TVA and see the devastation and they finally get a ping on Renslayer's TemPad.

With nearly every branched timeline wiped out, Sylvie is upset and says the TVA is the problem and that she's going home to Broxton, if it is still there. The episode ends with Sylvie successfully, but sadly returning home.

Top 10 Comic Books Rising in Value in the Last Week Include Wolverine, Birds of Prey, and Spawn https://comicbook.com/comics/news/top-10-comic-books-rising-in-value-in-the-last-week-wolverine-birds-of-prey-spawn/ Thu, 12 Oct 2023 23:41:00 +0000 Matt DeVoe f358280f-b307-4936-a5a9-082a43d8b097

Last weekend, a "Swift" trip to a Kansas City Chiefs football game sent the internet into a frenzy for more Dazzler books! That's not all. The release of Call of Duty's sixth season has also sent another book into our top ten. Rumors of a villain for the 2nd Batman movie have also propelled an old book forward for the Dark Knight. However, Black Canary doesn't need any rumors; she just needs bubble gum to make it into the top ten, unlike Wolverine, who merged with the Spirit of Vengeance to see his book pick up heat. Like Wolverine's Capullo cover, Transformers has also released a beautifully illustrated foil variant. Along with the resurgence of previous books, we see a brand new rumor propel a highly popular sci-fi storyline to our number 3 spot. Finally, after a month-long hiatus, Tynion returned to 'X' (Twitter) this past week to talk about a new variant on a fan-favorite series... causing the original copy to see a spike in interest!

Want to know what comic books are trending each week and why? COVRPRICE.COM uses live sales analytics to identify and compile the most robust market price guide, highlighting the weekly top trending comics. No opinions. Just data. Each week, they present a newly updated list of the TOP 10 COMICS trending in the aftermarket. These trends are due to rumors, fan-favorite covers, story-driven content, and content-related news.

(Photo: CovrPrice)

#10: BIRDS OF PREY #2 - OTTO SCHMIDT (1:50) | DC | 2023 | Before release, we saw preorders for this book skyrocket for this bubblegum cover with a high sale of $199. Last week, we saw more of the same but hit as high as $276! Bubble gum covers have become a big collector's item, and this recent cover release proves the value it can pull. Schmidt illustrates a beautiful Black Canary cover that fans are all hunting down! We tracked it at a current raw NM FMV of $154.

#9: WOLVERINE #36 - RYAN STEGMAN - REGULAR | MARVEL | 2023 | Behold, an indestructible rage mutant, meets the spirit of vengeance! A force has never been so terrifying as that of the Hellverine. This book was hyped up before its release and nearly flew off the shelves when it debuted. The second print retailer incentives (1:25) are already reaching $70 for preorders! Most LCS are out of this book already, so your best bet at getting a copy will be in the aftermarket. Good luck finding this character's debut! We tracked it at a high sale of $170 for a CGC 9.8 copy and a current NM FMV of $22. Find on eBay | Find on MCS

#8: BATMAN #609 | DC | 2002 | Back in 2022, a promotional website for The Batman had users solve puzzles that the Riddler had posted, with a video of Thomas Wayne's campaign promotions. The solved riddles unlocked this video, quickly flashing HUSH words across the screen. Fast forward to today, a recent interview with The Hot Mic with Jeff Sneider and John Rocha was very cryptic about Hush being the next villain. This was hardly a confirmation but rather more fuel to the already-established rumor. Nevertheless, this was enough fuel for fans to track down the first appearance of Thomas Elliot (who would later become the villain Hush). We tracked it at a high sale of $175 for a CGC 9.8 and a raw NM FMV of $39. Find on eBay | Find on MCS

#7: TRANSFORMERS #1 - IAN BERTRAM - FOIL (1:100) | IMAGE | 2023 | In July, Image released a TRANSFORMERS #1 ashcan edition that took SDCC by storm. The series' first issue was released three months later, and this retailer incentive 1:100 foil cover is just as popular! If you recall, the Transformers are now in a shared universe with G.I. Joe, a huge surprise to most. This also marks the premiere issue of an ongoing Transformers run at Image. If the 1:100 ratio cover is too far out of reach, try going for a 1:50 cover, which is also seeing heat! For the 1:100, we tracked it at a high sale of $180 for a raw copy and a current raw NM FMV of $137.

#6: THE DEPARTMENT OF TRUTH #1 - MARTIN SIMMONDS - COVER A | IMAGE | 2020 | It's old news that THE DEPARTMENT OF TRUTH was headed to Netflix in 2021. Due to extenuating circumstances, the writer's strike most recently halted production. There has been little news since then. This past week, rumors started floating around that Tynion himself had confirmed that the Netflix series was moving forward and was back in production. This came directly via his 9.26 Newsletter, where he stated, "Martin and I were coming up on what we knew was going to be a brief sabbatical on Department of Truth while I worked on the Television adaptation (which I'm excited to get back into now that it looks like the WGA strike is over." When you read that, there is no confirmation of continued traction on the project. Yet, the internet twisted his words a bit and ran with it. Recently, Tynion did return to 'X' (the site formally known as Twitter) after a one-month hiatus. This return was to promote a new 'bootleg' variant of THE DEPARTMENT OF TRUTH #1, which may have also helped spike a slight interest in this first print. We tracked it at a high sale of $85 for a CGC 9.8 copy and a current raw NM FMV of $16.

#5: WOLVERINE #37 - GREG CAPULLO - VIRGIN (1 PER STORE) | MARVEL | 2023 | Legendary modern-day artist Greg Capullo illustrates a Wolverine that leaps off the page. What makes this book so hard to find is that it was a thank you from distributors to retailers, and stores with a Diamond account and a Penguin Randomhouse account likely received copies from both. Nevertheless, this book sped from retailer shelves and vanished into the aftermarket. Tracking one down in the wild might be difficult. However, we still see many selling very well on eBay. We tracked it at a high sale of $858 for a raw copy and a current NM FMV of $64.

#4: X-MEN #130 - NEWSSTAND | MARVEL | 1980 | This book has a lot going for it. It is not only the first appearance of Dazzler but also the first appearance of Sebastian Shaw and the 2nd appearance of Kitty Pryde and Emma Frost. However, this week, we have seen a resurgence of Dazzler books, thanks to footage from a Kansas City Chiefs football game. Ryan Reynolds, Hugh Jackman, and Shawn Levy (Deadpool 3 director) were in attendance at this game. Joining them, most importantly, was Taylor Swift. While no other new rumors have surfaced, this was enough to spark a renewed interest in the Dazzler rumors! We tracked it at a high sale of $600 for a CGC 9.6 and a current raw FN FMV of $81 as copies flood and stay on the market.

#3: CYBERPUNK 2077: TRAUMA TEAM #1 | DARK HORSE | 2020 | Nothing will send a book into the spotlight like news that a live-action project is in the works. Last week, CD Projekt Red announced that the popular video game would soon be in production. However, whether this was to be a movie or a television series was not clarified. The showrunners are a company named Anonymous Content. They are the creators behind shows like Mr. Robot and True Detective, making it more likely that Cyberpunk 2077 will be a series. This first issue in the series is making waves, likely due to its relevance to the movie and its affordability as a key comic. We tracked it at a high sale of $91 for a CGC 9.8 copy and a current raw NM FMV of $16.

#2: SPAWN #1 | IMAGE | 1992 | This book is consistently moving through the top 20 lists every week. There is rarely a week where we aren't writing about Spawn, and for good reason. It is hands down one of the most affordable, most popular, and reasonably found books in the aftermarket. Additionally, Call of Duty released its 6th season this past week, containing 8 Spawn skins, including Al Simmons and the Violator in his true form. This exposure has sent Spawn to the top of the aftermarket list! We tracked it at a high sale of $180 for a CGC 9.8 and a raw NM FMV of $29.

#1: DAZZLER #1 | MARVEL | 1981 | This book continues to dazzle its way up the charts! Last Monday, Taylor Swift attended a Kansas City Chiefs game with her friends. Need more exciting news? Well, what if we said her friends were Ryan Reynolds (Deadpool), Hugh Jackman (Wolverine), and Shawn Levy (Deadpool 3 director)... now it gets interesting! Of course, it is important to remember that Taylor Swift is good friends with Ryan Reynolds and Blake Lively. Ryan Reynolds is good friends with both Hugh Jackman and Shawn Levy... So, it's likely that this is simply a group of friends all hanging out with each other and having a good time. Or, we can speculate that this must be confirmation that Dazzler will appear in Deadpool 3! Whatever side of the speculation you stand on won't stop the upward trend this book is experiencing once more! We tracked it at a high sale of $258 for a CGC 9.8 and a current raw VF FMV of $15.

The Marvels Projected For Surprising Opening Weekend Box Office https://comicbook.com/movies/news/the-marvels-projection-opening-weekend-box-office-mcu/ Thu, 12 Oct 2023 23:32:00 +0000 Jenna Anderson a01f4ab9-d959-4bc6-ad20-c74c586d61ba

The Marvels is arriving in theaters less than a month, continuing the stories of Carol Danvers / Captain Marvel (Brie Larson), Kamala Khan / Ms. Marvel (Iman Vellani), and Monica Rambeau (Teyonah Parris). There's definitely a lot of excitement around the Captain Marvel sequel -- but it looks like that might not yet be reflected in The Marvels' box office projections. According to new projections from BoxOfficePro, The Marvels is currently tracking to make between $50-75 million in its opening weekend, with a possible domestic total of $121-189 million.

If the $50 million metric ended up being the case, it would place The Marvels' opening weekend box office as the lowest-ever for a first run of an MCU movie, with The Incredible Hulk earning $57 million. The $75 million gross would be less than Black Widow's $80 million and on par with Ant-Man and the Wasp and Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings' $75 million. Captain Marvel, by comparison, opened to $153 million domestically.

How Long Is The Marvels' Runtime?

Late last month, it was confirmed that The Marvels will have the shortest runtime yet in the MCU, with the film clocking in at 1 hour and 45 minutes. For frame of reference, the title of shortest film in the franchise was previously held by both Thor: The Dark World and The Incredible Hulk, with a total of 1 hour and 52 minutes. Even then, The Marvels director Nia DaCosta has hinted that the film will deliver on a lot of elements.

"The biggest difference from the other MCU movies to date is that it's really wacky, and silly," DaCosta explained in a recent interview. "The worlds we go to in this movie are worlds unlike others you've seen in the MCU. Bright worlds that you haven't seen before."

As mentioned above, The Marvels will be released exclusively in theaters on November 10th.

Loki: New Season 2 Clip Shows Loki Going Up Against X-5 https://comicbook.com/marvel/news/loki-new-season-2-episode-2-clip-shows-loki-going-up-against-x-5/ Thu, 12 Oct 2023 20:59:00 +0000 Jamie Jirak e28c99e3-3152-4bfa-a073-cac0c87e44f3

The second episode of Loki's second season is dropping on Disney+ tonight, and it looks like Loki (Tom Hiddleston) will be venturing outside of the TVA. The season's first episode picked up right where the season one finale left off, and saw the titular character seeking help to stop time-slipping. Now, it looks like Loki and Mobius (Owen Wilson) will have to set off on some adventures in order to stop various variants of "He Who Remains" (Jonathan Majors) and keep reality from collapsing. Today, Marvel Studios shared a new clip to tease the second episode, which shows Loki facing off with Hunter X-5 (Rafael Casal).

Set somewhere in the past, X-5 is about to start fighting a group of people when he realizes it's actually Loki using his magic. When X-5 tells Loki to "fight fair," the God of Mischief sighs, "It's not a fair fight." The clip also teases some classic Loki moves and even shows a shadow of his iconic horned helmet.

"How mischievous," Marvel Studios captioned the clip. "Episode 2 of Loki Season 2 starts streaming tonight at 6PM PT only on @DisneyPlus." You can watch the clip in the post below:
